Students watch drop test
The ISM staff regularly develops and submits grant requests to philanthropic foundations, corporations, community groups, and government agencies. The resulting grant awards help bridge the gap between state funding and ISM's targeted total investment per student. ISM specifically asks outside organizations to contribute grant funds on behalf of the many ISM families who cannot afford to cover the full funding gap through their own financial contributions to ISM.

Current Foundation Grants

ISM thanks the following current year grantors for their support of our school. We could not succeed without them!

The William McCaskey Chapman & Adaline Dinsmore Chapman Foundation has awarded ISM a $41,000 grant in support of Spanish and math instructor salaries. This generous matching grant requires that the ISM Foundation raise $40,000 in donations from ISM families and others in order to receive the dollar for dollar matching amount by a self-imposed deadline of September 30, 2017. The combination of Family Share contributions and the philanthropy of the Chapman Foundation over the past several years ensure that ISM can teach Spanish to every student from kindergarten to eighth grade and deliver an enhanced math program that develops skills students can count on.

The Monterey Peninsula Foundation, host of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, has awarded ISM a two-year $20,000 per year grant in support of Hands-On Real-World Learning Experiences that maximize student learning and enrich the overall student experience. These experiences include our Schoolwide Enrichment Model, fieldtrips and on-campus events, middle-years sports program, and student projects and competitions like science fair and history day. The Monterey Peninsula Foundation also provides a $500 transportation grant for ISM 8th graders to visit the Chevron STEM Zone at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am each February. These grants continue ongoing generous financial support from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.

The Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation has awarded the ISM Foundation a $10,000 grant as Family Share funding for low-income families. The ISM Foundation passes these grant funds on to ISM to support the school's value-add programs.

Arts Council for Monterey County logoThe Arts Council for Monterey County has awarded ISM a $3,520 grant in support of our visual arts program thanks to support from the Monterey County Board of Supervisors. This grant allows us to integrate arts education into our curriculum where it positively impacts academic achievement, social and emotional development, and civic engagement for all students. Research also shows that strong arts programming helps close the achievement gap for underserved populations.

The Pebble Beach Company Foundation has awarded ISM a grant of $5,500 to provide literacy supports.

The Big Sur International Marathon awards two grants to ISM each year in recognition of our family volunteers staffing aide stations at both the Big Sur International Marathon and the Big Sur Half Marathon. The most recent grant totaled $1,900 for classroom materials. BSIM pays double dividends by providing a meaningful volunteer opportunity where our students and their parents work together as well as grant monies that keep our teachers from having to dip into their own pockets to buy classroom supplies.

The Gilbert M. Neill Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County has awarded $2,500 to ISM to support math activities such as Mathletics, teaching incentives, and materials to make math more interesting. This consistent annual support has helped make our math instruction both fun and meaningful across all grades K-8.

The Rotary Club of Monterey has awarded ISM $1,000 to help pay the salaries of the two professional artists who serve as credentialed teachers for the ISM visual arts and performing arts programs.

The Yellow Brick Road Benefit Shop has awarded ISM $1,000 toward general support of our PE program, an important component of our full-spectrum curriculum. This grant is funded through proceeds from the volunteer-run YBR Benefit Shop. We encourage all members of the ISM community to consider volunteering there, counting the hours as ISM Family Hours of service.

The International Language and Culture Foundation provides an annual $250 grant in support of the ISM Spanish program.
