International School of Monterey to Move to Seaside
Monterey, California (Monday, September 27, 2004)-
The International School of Monterey announced today that it will
be moving to the Manzanita School site in Seaside, at the request
of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD).
The move will take place during the school's Fall Break in the
second week of October. The move will free the school's current
site, Larkin School in Monterey, to be rented by MPUSD at a
higher rate to another entity.
"Although we would have preferred not to move mid-year,
we are excited about the opportunities that this move
presents," said Chrissie Jahn, Executive Director
of the International School. "We look forward to
becoming an excellent neighbor to King and another point
of pride in an outstanding neighborhood and city."
Parent Toni Deoudes stated, "We originally came to this
school because of its mission, not its zip code. We are
extremely satisfied with our daughter’s education and are
along for the duration of the ride."
"Preparations for the move are in full swing, trying to keep
disruptions to the students’ learning to a minimum,"
Jahn said. "MPUSD, which has moved two schools this
summer, is employing its experience to move the process
steadily along."
Opened in 2001, the International School has grown to
approximately 200 students in grades K-7. With a vision
of creating a world neighborhood, the International School
works to educate all students toward becoming conscientious,
compassionate, and responsible citizens. A tuition-free charter
school, the International School has pioneered the world-renowned
and innovative International Primary Curriculum in a public
school setting. In an inquiry-based, inclusive, participative,
and thematic learning environment, outstanding teachers maintain
high expectations of students to develop their self-potential
and connect with their world, which is reflected in their
consistently high scoring in the state-mandated Standardized
Testing and Reporting (STAR). Individualized instruction based
on various learning styles, multiple intelligence theory, and
diverse cultural backgrounds fosters the academic, intellectual,
social, ethical, physical, and emotional growth of each student.
It has occupied the Larkin site since 2002.
