Receives State Implementation Grant
MONTEREY, CA - May 30, 2002 - The International School
of Monterey (ISM) announced today the receipt of a $400K implementation
grant. The monies, paid out over a two-year period, are granted
through the Public Charter Schools Grant Program of the California
Department of Education.
"To say that we are pleased would be an understatement,"
states Joanne Storkan, an original founding Board Member. "Fundraising
during such a difficult economic climate, especially in this State,
is difficult. This grant will aid us tremendously."
ISM opened its doors in September 2001 as the first
International charter school from inception and is part of a 1200
school network in more than 101 countries worldwide. As a charter
school, ISM combines the open access of a public school (tuition
free) with the freedom for curricular innovation allowed by the
charter option.
Chrissie Jahn, Executive Director adds, "We have
an extremely supportive parent base that has aided in the success
of this first year both by rolling up their sleeves and working
and contributing financially. The grant gives our project a sense
of validation and accomplishment as well as exciting prospects for
the next few years. "
The International School of Monterey was started by
a group of parents with the vision of creating a school to educate
all students toward becoming conscientious, compassionate and responsible
citizens of the world. This is done using a philosophy centered
on inquiry-based teaching and utilizes the best educational programs
and practices from around the world. More information on ISM is
available online at www.ismonterey.org or by calling (831) 375-3480.
