Sam Farr and Sargent Shriver Honor Larry Horan

Monterey, California (Friday, March 19, 2004)-The International School of Monterey honored Larry Horan with its 2004 Global Citizenship Award at a gala dinner and charity auction held at the Beach and Tennis Club in Pebble Beach on Friday night.

In keeping with the International School vision of creating a world neighborhood, the Global Citizen Award recognizes an individual in the Monterey Bay regional community who has positively built relationships-business, educational, diplomatic, or otherwise-throughout the world. This was the inaugural year for the award.

In a letter read by master of ceremonies Dan Green, KWBW News Anchor, Sargent Shriver, first director of the United States Peace Corps, recalled Horan’s years as the director of the Peace Corps in Colombia, Costa Rica, and El Salvador saying, "Throughout his life, Larry Horan has channeled his enormous energy and intellect to bridge barriers between nations, cultures, and socioeconomic classes."

Recounting Horan’s lifetime of service, which included the post of regional director for the western division of the federal Office of Economic Opportunity, U.S. Representative Sam Farr spoke at the dinner praising Horan for his leadership in creating international understanding and supporting international education.

In his own comments, Horan, who has been a member of the Monterey Institute of International Studies board of trustees for nearly three decades, spoke of our ever-shrinking world and the vital importance of teaching our children to view that world with an international state of mind. He then praised the International School of Monterey for doing exactly that.

Founding partner of the law firm of Horan, Lloyd, Karachale, Dyer & Schwartz and Law & Cook, Horan has also served as chairman of the board for the Special Olympics of Northern California.

The charity auction held in conjunction with the honorary dinner netted over $50,000 for the International School of Monterey. As a public charter school, the International School relies on fundraising through its foundation to augment the basic state funding allocation in order to provide outstanding comprehensive education to its 148 K-6 students, including second language instruction, art, music, and physical education in addition to core subjects.

The International School of Monterey works to educate all students toward becoming conscientious, compassionate, and responsible citizens. A tuition-free charter school, the International School has pioneered the world-renowned and innovative International Primary Curriculum in a public school setting. In an inquiry-based, inclusive, participative, and thematic learning environment, outstanding teachers maintain high expectations of students to develop their self-potential and connect with their world. Individualized instruction based on various learning styles, multiple intelligence theory, and diverse cultural backgrounds fosters the academic, intellectual, social, ethical, physical, and emotional growth of each student.
