International School of Monterey Signs Lease with MPUSD

MONTEREY, CA - June 28, 2002 - The International School of Monterey (ISM) announced today the signing of a lease with the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) for space at the former Larkin Elementary School site. Having recently finished its first successful school year, ISM will be moving to its new home over the summer, in time for 120 K-5 students to begin the 2002-03 school year on September 3rd.

"This marks another great milestone in ISM's history," remarks Paul Gaucher, an Board Chairperson. "We feel very good about the relationship we have built with our chartering district [MPUSD] and the fair lease presented to us. We look forward to building similar ties to the community around the school site."

Joanne Storkan, an original founding Board member adds, "The success of ISM thus far is a direct result of the immense support of the ISM community - parents, teachers and the Board. When a group of people come together as dedicated to a project such as this, the results are truly amazing."

ISM offers an international curriculum, which includes language instruction starting in Kindergarten, with specific learning targets in every subject area through one common unit theme. It belongs to a network of approximately 1200 schools in more than 100 countries worldwide, but is unique in its equal accessibility, i.e. charter status.

"As we look to the future, we hope to present one viable model for public education," states Chrissie Jahn, Executive Director. "The school is doubling its enrollment this year and has a waiting list at every grade level. Through alliances with organizations such as the Monterey Institute for International Studies and the Defense Language Institute as well as local businesses and the home, this (the Monterey) community can really make a difference in the way children are educated in the U.S."

The International School of Monterey was started by a group of parents with the vision of creating a school to educate all students toward becoming conscientious, compassionate and responsible citizens of the world. This is done using a philosophy centered on inquiry-based teaching (the International Primary Curriculum) and utilizes the best educational programs and practices from around the world.
