International School of Monterey Receives Check from Local Safeway
MONTEREY, CA - January 8, 2003 - The International School of Monterey
(ISM) announced today the receipt of an approximately $1800 gift from
Safeway Store #749 in Carmel. Through the "Because Safeway Cares" program,
Safeway staff collected the money from patrons dropping excess change in
canisters at each cash register over the past few months. The check will be
presented to ISM this Sunday (1/12) at 1:00 pm, directly prior to an Open House
at the school site.
"It’s been said before: ‘It takes a community to educate a child’,"
quotes Paul Gaucher, ISM Board Chairperson, "and the support from this
local store in addition to the parents, teachers, administrators, and our
District indicates the dedication of this community to that common goal."
ISM offers an international curriculum, which includes language instruction
starting in Kindergarten and specific learning targets in every subject area
through one common unit theme. It belongs to a network of approximately 1200
schools in more than 100 countries worldwide, but is unique in its equal
accessibility, i.e. charter status.
"Each Safeway store chooses one non-profit organization to support through
this program and we were very interested in ISM’s global philosophy,"
states John Nahas, Assistant Manager at Safeway Store #749.
"We are pleased that we were able to contribute to such a progressive program."
"With the State’s proposed budget cuts to public education,
this check arrives at an opportune time," notes Chrissie Jahn,
ISM Executive Director. "As we look ahead to the continued
growth of our school, we hope the community will continue to support
this viable model for public education in the U.S."
The International School of Monterey was started by a group of parents
with the vision of creating a school to educate all students toward
becoming conscientious, compassionate and responsible citizens of the world.
This is done using a philosophy centered on inquiry-based
teaching and utilizes the best educational programs and
practices from around the world. More information on ISM is available online at
