International School of Monterey Signs Lease with PGUSD

MONTEREY, CA - April 6, 2001 - The International School of Monterey (ISM) announced today the signing of a lease with the Pacific Grove Unified School District (PGUSD) for space at the David Avenue School site yesterday morning. Scheduled to open as a K-2 charter school in September of 2001, this lease signifies another milestone in ISM's history.

"If you build it, they will come," quotes Joanne Storkan, an original founding Board Member. "We feel very good about the relationship we have built with Superintendent Jack Marchi and Asst. Superintendent Robin Blakley at PGUSD and the fair lease presented to us. The community, especially around the school site, also seems extremely supportive."

ISM is the first International charter school and joins a network of 1182 schools in more than 101 countries worldwide. As a charter school, ISM combines the open access of a public school with the freedom for innovation allowed by the charter option.

" I am honored to be associated with such a hard-working parent group," states Storkan. "And the support from our charter-granting District, King City, has also been immense."

Chrissie Jahn, another Board member adds, "as we go into the final months before opening, we will be concentrating on administrative issues such as hiring teachers, curriculum development, community outreach and fundraising. We have a goal of raising $250,000 by July, which is no small feat. However, we believe that this project is too important not to pursue and that many in the community feel the same way."

The International School of Monterey was started by a group of parents with the vision of creating a school to educate all students toward becoming conscientious, compassionate and responsible citizens of the world. This is done using a philosophy centered on inquiry-based teaching (the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program) and utilizes the best educational programs and practices from around the world.
