If You Build It, They Will Come….

The International School of Monterey officially has a home!  Many of you have already heard the terrific news that the David Avenue School in Pacific Grove will be our new home.  On Thursday, April 5th, we signed a lease for 4 classrooms in the C-wing and will be able to open a K-2 program in the fall.  Here is how Lisa Kline, one of our charter parents, felt after visiting the site with her daughter. “What an impression of space is felt by looking across the play fields at the David Avenue school toward the ancient, immense trees, and the sense of infinity translated by the great ocean beyond them.  What a suitable start for young children to feel the expanse of international.”

Now with the large hurdle of site selection behind us, it is now time to focus on fundraising, curriculum, enrollment, site preparation and a staffing.  The largest of these tasks is, of course, fundraising. We need to raise $250,000 by the end of July, and a wonderful opportunity has presented itself in the form of The Human Race  on May 12, 2001.  This event is the largest collaborative fundraising event in Monterey County. It is both an 8.k walk and a 10k run.  The Volunteer Center plans, organizes, and produces the event as a community service.  Participating organizations use the Human Race as their fundraiser, yet are responsible only for obtaining and collecting donations made payable to The Human Race.  Of those donations the participating agency receives 75% and the Volunteer Center keeps 25%. So what this means is that members of the ISM community get sponsors to donate money in support of ISM for the walk or the run, we get a chance to come together as an organization and we have an opportunity to show our presence as a viable education alternative. To sign up, pledge an amount, or for more information please call Paul Gaucher at 393-1760 or e-mail at pgaucher@aol.com. The l Volunteer Center website also has details. www.yesillhelp.org. We look forward to seeing everyone at 8:00 AM on May 12 at Lovers Point to kick off the funding of The International School of Monterey.

The last announcement is to mark your calendars for the evening of May 23, 2001. We will be having a parents meeting at the David Avenue site. The exact time is to be determined. The purpose of the meeting is to focus on enrollment information and to schedule specific tasks that need to be completed in order to open in September. If you have friends that are interested in having their children attend ISM, bring them to this meeting. Bring your questions and your volunteer spirit to help get the school ready for September.

If you know of someone that is interested in ISM, yet might not have received this e-mail newsletter, please have them visit our website and give us their information. You can find us at www.ismonterey.org or e-mail to info@ismonterey.org Thank you for your time and attention.
