Our staff continues to grow! Join us in welcoming the following new staff members:
1. Everado Arreola: Bookkeeper (part-time); 2. Mr. Andre de la Torre: Interim Counselor; 3. Christina Homami: Office Aide (part-time) and 4. Katie Kelley: Test Coordinator (part-time). We are pleased to have each of these individuals join our team to assist us in meeting student, accounting, administrative, and testing demands in the front office.
We also have some new faces in the Afterschool program with the hiring of Casey McHugh and Guinevere Thomason-Powers. Both of these part-time employees will be overseeing and assisting students in the Homework Help program, offered Monday through Thursday, 3:20 - 5:00 p.m., in the pod. Welcome to all our new staff, both full-time and part-time!
 Please mark your calendars for Picture Day at ISM on Wednesday, September 26th for Kindergartners - 3rd graders and Thursday, September 27th for 4th - 8th graders. Information packets went out on Friday or Monday (depending on grade) detailing the dates, the vendor (Wei Chang), and the packet prices. Please note that all students will be photographed on this day, regardless of whether a photo packet is ordered. These photos are also used for the yearbook, so we ensure that all students participate. If, however, you are interested in ordering a photo packet, complete an order form and envelope and return it to your child's homeroom teacher before Wednesday, the 26th; please do not forward them to the front office. Wei Chang will collect all orders by class on Picture Day! Please make sure your child is wearing clothing that is clean and uniform-appropriate. Additional order forms are available on the credenza in the front office.
For the first time in ISM's history, we will be initiating this year a series of staff planning days -- with early dismissal at 11:30 a.m. -- immediately followed by staff development days in which students are not in attendance. The first in this series is coming up next month prior to the Fall Break. Please plan accordingly as students will be dismissed promptly on Thursday, October 4th at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will not be served at all on Thursday. The procedure at day's end will be exactly as it is on regular school days. Students will accompany their teachers to the front lawn and will be dismissed from there. We would like all students to be picked up no later that 11:45 a.m. Please note that the Afterschool International (ASI) program will not be offered on this day, so plan ahead to pick your child up in a timely fashion and if necessary, arrange alternate afterschool care.
Additionally, on Friday, October 5th, students will not be in school on this day. It is scheduled as a staff development day, so please make plans for this non-school day. The Afterschool International (ASI) program will also not be operating on this day.
The second annual ISM Read-A-Thon kicked off this week! Last year's event was a tremendous success and we are hopeful for a repeat this year. This is an exciting opportunity for staff and parents to reiterate the importance of reading and literacy, while generating fundraising benefits for the library and individual classroom libraries. Students will be encouraged to read for thirty minutes or more per day for ten days AND log the minutes read each day! Students can also find sponsors to pledge towards their reading achievements. Half of the money raised will be forwarded back to students in "book money" to be used at the Fall Scholastic Book Fair; the other half will go to the ISM teaching staff for additional literacy materials. So, students, get ready to take off on a flight of literacy and find some enjoyable reading materials to read during the next two weeks!
Prizes for the Read-A-Thon will include the following:
* For 100 percent participation: for those classes in which all students participate and submit a reading log, they will earn an ice cream party;
* Grand Participation: for those classes in which all students participate, read 300 minutes or more, and submit a reading log, they will earn an extra free dress day;
* Triple Challenge: For those students who read for ten days, arrange ten sponsors of $10 or more, and submit their reading and sponsor logs, they will earn a free Klutz kit of their choice.
We thank parent volunteers Janice Barker (barkerjf1@sbcglobal.net) and Yvette Satchell (yvettecarmel@carmel.net for their efforts in coordinating this year's Read-A-Thon as well as the Fall Scholastic Book Fair. Through their efforts, we continue to improve literacy resources at ISM!
GRADE 6 CAMP JACK HAZARD RETREAT: All 6th grade students were away on retreat last week to Camp Jack Hazard, located in the Sonora Pass area of the Stanislaus National Forest. The aim of the retreat was to foster a strong sense of a grade level community, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration and self-regulation. The natural setting, and the scale of the landscape, also served as a springboard for introducing major themes for the year.
Over the course of the week, students learned to rock climb, navigate a high ropes course, and hike a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Small groups constructed “Andy Goldsworthy-esque” stone cairn sculptures, explored the Columns of the Giants geological area, splashed around in the chilly Stanislaus River, and hiked the three miles to Sword Lake to deploy a mini ROV (remotely-operated vehicle). We invited you to view the many photos and video clips on the Grade 6 class
website at www.becauseoftime.org/FogleSpedding/CJH%20Retreat.html.
GRADE 7 SAN FRANCISCO RETREAT: Last week, our 7th graders ventured to the beautiful “City on the Bay” and enjoyed an exciting, whirlwind tour of San Francisco. They visited and experienced many different cultures while in San Francisco and will be processing the impact of their cultural tour for many weeks to come, if not longer. From the spectacular artifacts in the Asian Art Museum’s collection, to the sights, sounds and shopping of Chinatown, to the murals of Balmey Alley, they were filled with the voices of many worlds. Some were “spooked” by San Francisco’s past at the Queen Anne Hotel and environs and haunted by El Gato del Diablo. Participants stepped way back in time to see how DaVinci’s Renaissance mind leads directly to our modern world. What does the future hold for art and electronics? The trip to the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) and the Metreon may have held some answers. The 7th grade group experienced a lot, but perhaps the most memorable experience was serving a meal to over 700 disadvantaged people at the Glide Memorial Church. Miss Shephard, for one, will never forget Glide’s motto, “God bless everyone. No exceptions.” Imagine if we all really lived that sentiment.
Students will be creating a performance art piece with the San Francisco “voice” that spoke most loudly to them. We definitely will look forward to their presentations!
We also wanted to be sure to highlight the efforts of those individuals who made this trip successful. At the top of the list is Elissa McLaurin, our new 6-8 Resource Aide, whose organizational efforts ensured that the trip was well-organized and flowed smoothly. As the chief navigator and hand holder, Elissa deserves the “Mommy in Residence” award for her kindness and attention to the needs of our students. Both she and parent volunteer Patrick Tregenza were also wonderfully helpful when it came to navigating the 7th grade group safely and efficiently around the city. Many thanks! In addition to route planning, Patrick Tregenza, kept everyone in line, and we do mean in line (to the right of the sidewalk). By no means is it easy getting 25 fun-loving 7th graders around the city on time; herding skills were often needed! Thanks also to parents Kim Campbell and Barry Perkins for their chaperoning and driving assistance. Hostelling can be fun! Right chaperones? Many thanks also go to parents Suzi LeBon and Patricia Rodriquez for providing necessary driving duties. Additional thanks go to all who donated extra funding so that we could meet our expenses! A big thanks also goes to staffer Lisa Wichael-Loomis for her initial planning and suggestions for our trip.
GRADE 8 SOUTHERN CA RETREAT: Dave Brandau, Grade 8 instructor, and Mary Welsh, 6 – 8 Resource Aide, led the 8th graders down to Los Angeles and Catalina Island last week for what proved to be a busy and activity-packed week. Students and staff have much processing / reflecting to do this week on the many activities in which they engaged. Visiting the Museum of Tolerance in L.A. was truly a moving and powerful experience, the snorkeling and kayaking while at the Catalina Island Marine Institute was challenging and rewarding, while all the “hanging out”, eating, driving, etc. were quite entertaining.
A huge, giant thanks to our chaperones Peggy Donnell, Lisa Seva'aetasi, Dave Shifflett, and Mary Welsh. They have done wonderful work! Without them, this trip would not have been possible. We invite you to give them a huge hug and big thanks when you see them next! An extra thanks goes to Mary Welsh for turning us on to the Catalina Island Marine Institute. We found a great place for our 8th graders to learn and explore new and challenging experiences on a very interesting Island! Thanks, Mary!!!!!!!! Reports Dave Brandau: “I had a very fun week spending time with and learning about all your wonderful children. We now have a great basis to build a memorable 8th grade school year!”
In order to systematically handle community donations for our ISM library, we are asking that any donations to the library be done systematically on the first Friday of each month only! Due to the October Break, the next book donation day will be Saturday, November 3rd. In the past, we have often become inundated with library book donations and have had neither the storage space nor the manpower to deal with the donation. By implementing a standard donation time, we hope to eliminate that challenge. For those of your considering book donations, we are looking for more:
*non-fiction of any kind, to include biographies;
*newer fiction for Grades 6-8; and
*children's classics:
We will not be accepting donations of encyclopedias, paperback romances and novel better suited to adults, pop-up books, and cartoon books / graphic novels. Thank you!
To all community members: Thank you all for your diligence in reacting quickly to the lice outbreak we had at ISM last week. It's looking like we are on the upside of the outbreak and all looks well at this time. Here are a few notes to help all of us be sure we do not have a repeat outbreak. “Nurse Nancy” from MPUSD was nice enough to come by last week and provide this information to us.
Please check your child's hair weekly, both boys and girls. If you see lice or eggs, check everyone's hair that resides in the household. Everyone with nits or lice will need to be treated with a special lice shampoo (Nix or Rid are the most commonly-used products). Follow the directions carefully, be sure to apply to DRY hair, and saturate the head fully. Leave on the scalp for 15-20 minutes and then just rinse the hair. Do not wash out or use regular shampoo for 2 to 3 days to leave a “coating” on the hair. In 7-10 days repeat the shampoo. Do not rely on the comb solely to remove the nits. PICK out the nits with your fingers.
Do not share combs, brushes or hats with other children. Hang jackets individually; do not throw in piles on top of each other. Wear long hair in braids or ponytails to reduce the travel time from head to head. Vacuum the rugs, floors, furniture and even the car where the headrest sits. Do not use the expensive house sprays. Take stuffed animals and unused clothing and bag everything up in black lawn bags for 2 weeks to kill lice. If we are all diligent about the above measures, we should be able to get through the year without another of these pesky outbreaks. Thanks again for your diligence!
* AFTERSCHOOL INTERNATIONAL (ASI): *ASI Fall Break Camp:*:
This year, there will be no ASI fall or spring break camps. However, we are looking forward to holding our regular summer camps again at the end of the school year. For any questions, please feel free to email Lisa Wichael-Loomis at lwloomis@ismonterey.org.
After school International (ASI) is looking for:
• for any gently used Matchbox or Hot wheels sized cars to add to our collection;
• any gently used Tinker toys, K'nex, or other type of wooden building blocks;
• more Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head parts.
Thanks to a large donation made last year, we have plenty of lego blocks, puzzles, and games. The ASI students and staff thank the entire ISM community for their continued support.
* OCTOBER LUNCH MENUS: October lunch menus are now available online at our ISM website at www.ismonterey.org/lunchASI.html. Families may go online to print copies of the monthly menu and lunch order forms. Menus will also be coming home with students on Wednesday, September 19th. Please remember when submitting menus to clearly mark the meals your child is ordering, be sure each order form has a name on it, and payment --- either a check to "ISM" or cash -- is attached. Just as a friendly reminder: that lunch orders are due EACH Wednesday for the coming week. No exceptions will be made as shopping is done on Thursdays and Fridays based on the final lunch orders received by each Wednesday. Please submit orders directly to Coordinator Lisa Wichael-Loomis' box in the admin office. Thank you!

Additionally, we are able to complete tasks ourselves, rather than relying on the often slower MPUSD maintenance work order process to complete these tasks. : Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) CARPOOL HELP FOR SALINAS FAMILY: The Powley family, who live in south Salinas, are looking for carpooling help. If you live in the "neighborhood" of Blanco and Alisal streets in Salinas and are able to provide transportation help, please contact Ned or Katrina Powley at their home number of 758-3141. Thank you in advance!
2) SEVERAL ADDITIONAL WORKING VACUUMS: If any community member is thinking of upgrading their home vacuum and would like to donated their old, yet working one to ISM, we would love to have a few additional vacuums - to use as backup if one of our professional grade machines goes down or for staff to use following a particularly busy -- and messy -- day at school. Contact Lisa Griffin Burns to donate. Thank you!
3) VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SALINAS AIRSHOW: Based on previous volunteer outreach, we have a fantastic group of ISM parents signed up to work the parking area at the Salinas Air Show for the weekend of Sept. 28th, 29th and 30th, yet we are still in need of several more people to make it work. Both Friday and Sunday have a low number of volunteers and we could use more help. Salinas Air Show volunteers will sell parking tickets at the show for this three day event. This volunteer work then brings in money to ISM from the Air Show sponsors...as well as it fulfills the ISM requirement for monthly volunteer hours. What a great deal!!
Though we love to involve our students when we can, we are asking for adults only because of the money exchange involved. We need about 16 people at all times for shifts at approximately 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 on both Saturday and Sunday. All volunteers will get access to the air show as well as a BBQ on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Details on meeting times and places will be coming soon.For more information or to sign-up, please call Resource Aide Mary Welsh at 644-0841 or email her at: mcwelsh@redshift.com. Thanks, everyone!
4) Empties 4 Cash RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: UPDATED INFORMATION: This program regularly generates revenue for ISM, so we definitely want to encourage as much participation as possible! Feel free to drop off your cartridges with Karen in the front office or alternately, we do have postage paid mailing envelopes available at the front desk so you can forward your cartridges to Empties 4 Cash directly, if that is more convenient. Please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward their used inkjet cartridges to ISM! Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!
