We have recently had to say "goodbye" to several 7th grade students who have moved on to other schools. We would like to wish Joshua Goncalves and Ryan Le Bon good luck in their new endeavors and hope that the transition to their new schools goes smoothly.
We would also like to welcome two new students who have recently joined the ISM community. 7th grader Jacob Brown started school with us on November 6th in Miss Shephard's class. Additionally, on November 19th, 4th grader Michael Kennedy became the newest student to join Ms. Wharton's class. We are very excited to have both of these new students join our ISM community. We applaud them on their willingness to make an important school change at this mid-year juncture!
We also want to introduce two new part-time employees who have joined ISM recently. Hired in mid-September, Everardo (Lalo) Arreola, serves as a part-time bookkeeper providing bookkeeping and accounting support to ASI / Fresh Lunch Programs Coordinator Lisa Wichael-Loomis, Business Administrator Lisa Griffin Burns, and Director of Advancement Lorraine Williby. In addition, Richard Baker joined the staff following the October Break in the capacity of part-time Computer Support Coordinator. We are thrilled to have both of these individuals join our staff as their services are much needed to maintain efficient administrative and technology services to students, staff, and parents. Welcome Lalo and Richard!
"It is almost impossible to stop happy, satisfied children from learning." (Kohn, 1998, p. 153)
This simple, yet constructive phrase would clearly demonstrate why a positive learning environment here at ISM is crucial.
Our California Standardized Testing and Reporting (S.T.A.R.) results for the Spring 2007 in both English-Language Arts and Mathematics were well above average! 85 percent or more of ISM students scored in the advanced, proficient, or basic levels in both Mathematics and English-Language Arts for all grades 2-8.
Here at ISM, we are going to begin to use this data to drive our curriculum and our assessments. We will begin to have important discussions with our staff regarding elements of the English-Language Arts testing, inclusive of word analysis, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing strategies. Additionally, in terms of the Mathematics test, estimation, operations, Algebra, and statistics will be examined.
If we want children to learn well, the brain research indicates that three conditions are necessary.
* a climate of relaxed alertness;
* content that engages the whole child;
* an opportunity for the child to bring to the surface or represent what is experienced or learned. (Jensen, 1998)
We strongly believe that our international curriculum and instruction reflect the research with regards to meeting the conditions in which children learn. I am pleased with our S.T.A.R. testing results and our academic success and will continue to supervise improvements in all categories of achievement here at ISM.
The ISM Board of Trustees has scheduled the first parent / guardian meeting of the year for Monday, December 10th, from 6:45 - 7:30 p.m. in the multiuse room at the school. Consistent with the Parent Contract that parents and guardians have signed, at least one parent or guardian of each current student should plan on attending this important informational meeting.
ISM Board of Trustees Chair Prashant Gupta will talk about recent successes; positive initiatives currently in progress including strategic planning; the 2007-2008 school leadership team; progress toward a sustainable financial business model, and the Family Fair Share campaign. Should you have any questions regarding this mandatory meeting, please email ISM Board Trustee member John Tilley at jtilley@ismonterey.org. Thank you!
Sean Madden, Vice Chair of the ISM Board of Trustees, encourages ISM parents, guardians, and staff members to take a brief moment out of their busy schedules to complete a short online survey and here is why. He writes: "Over the past few months, the Strategic Planning Committee of the ISM Board and a larger Strategic Advisory Team, which includes a representative group of parents and teachers, have worked together to draft ISM's long term strategic commitments, medium term target outcomes, and short term priorities. These guiding objectives will help guide the future development of our school.
At this point, we have identified 38 proposed short term priorities for 2008. Given that we cannot address all of them at the same time, we have created a survey focused on determining their relative importance so that we can apply our limited financial and human resources wisely to tackle the most important first. In order for us to move forward together as a community we need each of you -- every parent, guardian, and teacher -- to help us set our priorities. Please take a few minutes to complete the short survey posted at
http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB2276K4Q7JDR. Thanks in advance!" For more information or to contact Sean directly regarding the Strategic Planning process or this Zoomerang survey, he can be reached per email at strategic@ismonterey.org.
Attention all Grandparents in the ISM community. We would like to invite you to accompany your grandchildren to the Monterey Youth Museum for a special afterschool outing! The MY Museum, located at 601 Wave Street, Suite 100, near the parking garage on Cannery Row, is opening its doors from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. to host this event for ISM community members only! This event is open to all ISM students in Grades Kindergarten through 8th and their grandparents or special relatives. The MY Museum is packed with a variety of hands-on exhibits for hours of fun. In addition, each ISM classroom has prepared informative and colorful posters which will be hung at the MY Museum to provide more information about our school. Light snacks will be served and representatives from the Family Association and the ISM Foundation will be on-hand to answer questions relating to ISM, volunteer opportunities, as well as funding needs. We would like to thank staff member Jessica Baxter (Gr. 2 instructor) and volunteers Aletha Wallace, Chalet Caitlin, and Wendy Bluhm for their help in coordinating this event.
Nominated by Kindergartner Kylie Johnston, Miss Maren has been chosen as KWAV's "Teacher of the Month" for her hard work and dedication as an ISM Kindergarten instructor. As author Rober Fulghum notes in his popular book entitled "All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten", basic skills critical to life success, such as learning to play fair, sharing, not hitting, and supporting classmates, are all learned in a successful Kindergarten classroom environment created by a caring instructor. Miss Maren has been recognized by Kylie and many of her classmates as just such an exceptional teacher. Kylie sums it up well by stating: "She (Miss Maren) is the best of all in the whole wide world!". Congratulations to Miss Maren for this recognition, to Kylie for her amazing support, and to KWAV for acknowledging the efforts of our amazing staff member!
We are pleased to announce the recent completion and formalization of the Spanish curriculum by our Spanish team of instructors Rene Candia, Maria Emilia Gatica, and Marilu Lichtlen. The curriculum is well designed using a combination of cultural, conversation, grammatical, and listening portions to insure a dynamic Spanish program here at ISM. A great deal of time and effort has gone into creating this curriculum. Special thanks goes out to the Spanish department for their hard work and commitment. Associate Head of School Larry Cummins has personally reviewed each page of this K-8 curriculum and he is impressed with all of its components. We look forward to the immediate utilization of this improved foreign language curriculum and the successes it will yield!

We are thrilled to announce that the Bookfaire that concluded just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday yielded sales of $9545.29. Once again, the amazing team of Janice Barker and Yvette Satchell pooled their coordination efforts to organize pre-Fair logistics, communicate Fair details to students, staff, and parents, arrange Fair volunteers, handle sales and revenue details, and generally provide enthusiastic support! Without their help, these ongoing literacy fundraisers would not be so well-planned and profitable. One of the new and successful elements of this Fall Fair was the "book credits" earned by students who participated in the Read-A-Thon held earlier this year. $5711.73 was available to those students to spend at the Bookfaire. $3833.56 was spent by customers in additional sales, thereby yielding the $9545.29 in overall revenue. Janice Barker and Yvette Satchell will be working with Scholastic Books to finalize the ultimate benefit / credit to ISM in terms of books and materials we will be able to purchase to further strengthen library and classroom literacy materials. We thank all of you who supported the Bookfaire, either through sales or volunteerism. You help is invaluable!
Prior to Thanksgiving,
eleven current and former ISM students performed at the Youth Music Monterey "Festival of Light and Sound" concert held November 18th at the beautiful Sunset Center in Carmel under the talented direction of Larry Grainger. The level of talent and dedication that these students exhibited was remarkable and those ISM community members fortunate to be in the audience, to include Grade 6 instructor Tod Spedding, were truly "wowed" by their performance. Kudos go to ISM students Mara (violin) and Daniel (cello) Awerbuck, Charlotte Chuen (violin), Enrique Garcia (violin), Peter Mellinger (violin), Jonathon Vu (violin), Anna (cello) and James (violin) Welsh, former students Iljin (violin) and Sohee Cho (flute), Ari Freedman (cello), and parent "Papa Joe" Welsh on bass! Mark your calendars for the next Youth Music Monterey concert entitled "Shall We Dance?" which will be at the Sunset Center in Carmel on Sunday, February 24th, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.
This past summer, 6th grader Michelle Feygin participated in the Southwest Regional Skating Championship. Michelle did exceedingly well, placing 1st in the Juvenile Figure Skating Division AND 3rd in the Juvenile Solo Dance Competition. This success then qualified Michelle to go onward to Omaha, Nebraska for the U. S. National Championship where she received a 4th place medal in the Solo Dance - Juvenile Division. What a great accomplishment! The next time you see Michelle, be sure to congratulate her for these outstanding achievements and wish her well in future competitions! b
Bob Homami, dad of Jessica, grade 4, recently completed work as a Stereoscopic Animator with Sony Imageworks on the newly released film "Beowulf in 3-D". "Beowulf" is a 2007 animated epic film adapted from the Old English heroic epic poem of the same name. We invite you to see the 3-D version now playing at the Maya Cinemas in Salinas. Please note that the movie is rated PG-13 due to violence and mature content and is not intended for younger audience members. Movie reviews have been favorable, so if you chose to see this flick, you will not only enjoy a good movie, but you will also see Bob's name listed in the credits!!! Congratulations, Bob!
Please note that prior to the Winter Holiday break, we still have two days in which students will be released early at 11:30 a.m.; consequently, mark your calendars for Thursday, December 6th and Thursday, December 20th.The December 6th early release day allows staff to finalize preparations for Student-led conferences the following day on Friday, December 7th (see below), and the December 20th dismissal comes just prior to the two-week long Winter Break. On each of these days, all children must be picked up no later than 11:45 a.m. from the front lawn. Additionally, lunch will not be served at all, nor will the Afterschool International (ASI) program be offered on early dismissal days, so please plan accordingly.
For the first time ever, staff will have an opportunity to conduct parent / student / teacher conferences during the day, rather than coordinating appointments after the long school day. Conference schedules are being posted now, so please make sure to contact your child(ren)'s teacher(s) to arrange an all-important conference time. For those grades/classes conducting ISM's unique student-led conferences, please ensure that your student will also be available to accompany you at the designated conference time. Please remember that the Afterschool International (ASI) program will notbe offered on this day, so make appropriate childcare, if necessary.
Under the leadership of ASI / Fresh Lunch Program Coordinator Lisa Wicheal-Loomis, we are currently collecting non-perishable food items to benefit the Monterey County Food Bank. Collection barrels were delivered at the beginning of this week and are available in each classroom in addition to the multiuse room. In an effort to generate student enthusiasm for this all-important school-wide food drive, classes will compete against one another to collect the most non-perishables, such as canned goods, rice, pasta, and other pantry essentials. The competition is designed to encourage students to bring in specific items on specific days and if they do so, extra collection points will be awarded to that class. Here's how it breaks down:
* today was "Wacky Wednesday": for the most unusual food items;
* Thursday, November 29th - "Thanksgiving Themed Thursday": students can donate Thanksgiving related items worth 10 points each;
* Friday, November 30th - "PJ Day": students can wear appropriate PJs (as it is Free Dress Friday) and bring in store bought peanut butter and jelly items worth 25 points each;
* Monday, December 3rd - "Macaroni Monday": Mac and Cheese is the non-perishable of the day worth 10 points per box;
* Tuesday, December 4th - "Tuna Tuesday": each can of tuna will earn the donating student 25 points each.
Of course, any non-perishables are welcome as the Monterey County Food Bank is struggling this year to meet the needs of its clients, so please assist your child in bringing in at least one food item during this drive. We were an amazingly strong contributor to the Food Bank last December, exceeding donation levels of area colleges! We thank you for your support in advance.

The ISM student directories were distributed prior to fall break. If you did not receive your order, or would like to purchase one of the extra books that were printed, please see Office Administrator Karen Kushel. The books are for sale at $5 per booklet. Also, if you see any typos
or omissions, please email Tara Clark at calbeartara@yahoo.com.
We are also looking for someone to help with this project next year and to take
it over completely the following year. If you knowledgeable with Excel or would like to learn it, please consider taking on this project.
Student Council, supported by advisor Danielle Fogle, Grade 6 instructor, is adding an international focus to their list of goals for the year. This is the first time that student council members have taken on such a task, so we are both hopeful of their success and supportive of their goal.
As most of you know, a horrific genocide is currently taking place in the Darfur region of western Sudan. To create greater student awareness of this ongoing conflict -- which are primarily ethnic and tribal in nature -- and to "make a difference", Student Council has created a fundraiser titled "Change for Darfur" to help those in need. Collection socks have been hung in the various classrooms as well as the admin office and Student Council will be emptying the socks as needed. We would like to encourage students (and parents) to participate in this fundraiser by bringing loose change sealed in a zip lock baggy to school to drop in one of these socks and to help Student Council help Darfur. In conjunction with the Darfur fundraiser, a number of Student Council members will accompany advisor Danielle Fogle to an upcoming 2007 Human Rights Day Luncheon sponsored by the local United Nations Association chapter. They will then share their experience with fellow students. For more information, contact Student Government advisor Danielle Fogle at dfogle@ismonterey.org.

SATURDAY WORK DAY: As the holidays are rapidly approaching, the December Saturday Work Day will be held the first Saturday of December; the traditional work day event is held on the second Saturday of each month. Parent volunteers who assist with the monthly Saturday Work Days are not only meeting their mandatory volunteer hours, but providing critical support by ensuring that projects that are difficult to achieve during the busy work week are completed in a timely fashion! Additionally, we are able to complete tasks ourselves, rather than relying on the often slower MPUSD maintenance work order process to complete these tasks. We encourage you to bring your great attitude, an interest in meeting other ISM families, and especially your hammers, drills, screwdrivers, nails and screws, saws, rakes, and brooms....and we will see you on Saturday, December 8th. Each 5th grade student is tasked to create a persona (or character) from a colony at this time period, develop a basic history -- birth date, birth place, marital status, occupation, opinion on independence from Great Britain, and the like. Students are also dressed in period attire and display, use, and discuss their occupations and life with Colonial Museum visitors. The experience is wonderfully hands-on and interactive for students and visitors alike. This is an event worth taking the time to see as history is brought to life by our amazing students!
