1. ISM BOARD CHAIR ANNOUNCES NEW SUPERINTENDENT: MR. RICHARD DA SYLVEIRA Dear ISM Families: Great news for our school! I am privileged to announce that we have hired Richard Da Sylveira as our new superintendent/principal. He will begin in early July 2007.

For the past five years, Richard has served as principal at Cowan Avenue Elementary in the Los Angeles Unified School District. He also held positions as assistant principal at Cowan Avenue for one year, categorical program advisor at Marvin Elementary for three years, and bilingual teacher at West Vernon Elementary for two years, all within LA Unified. He holds a Master of Education in Administration from UCLA, a Master of Science in Education with a focus on Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Spanish from Oral Roberts University.

As principal at Cowan Avenue Elementary, Mr. Da Sylveira has led a staff of 50. To effectively serve the school’s diverse student population, he created programs to meet varied needs including a strategic plan for early identification and intervention for lower performing students, a learning lab, and a restructured special education service delivery model. He also initiated a Model United Nations program to increase student awareness of global issues. On the strength of these programs, Cowan Avenue’s API test scores rose from the 700s to the high 800s during his tenure.

Our intensive six-month search drew dozens of applicants including more than 20 highly qualified candidates from public schools throughout California as well as International Schools as far away as Eastern Europe and Africa. Guided by the highly regarded public education search firm of RJ Gatti Associates, a committee of the ISM Board of Trustees and a team of staff members and parents interviewed a select group of four candidates. Two top choices were then forwarded to the full board for an extended interview process. In the end, Mr. Da Sylveira rose to the top. His record of success in curriculum mapping, staff development, and improving student performance, coupled with his career commitment to global, bilingual, and multicultural education make him a perfect fit for us as a public charter international school.

On behalf of the board, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the selection process including the many who attended the input sessions held by the Gattis and those who submitted input via email. We particularly want to thank the team of parents and staff members who took part in the interview process; they are: Sam Alladeen, David Awerbuck, Carrie Bretz-Barry, Gordon Freedman, Sherry Porter, Najoo Ruediger, Sandy Sheppard, Chantel Touryan, Neli Volante, Alicia Wharton, and Mary Welsh. They represented the broader ISM community perfectly, being very thorough and thoughtful in evaluating the candidates. The selection process was a tremendous ISM community effort! Prashant Gupta, Chair, ISM Board of Trustees

2. 2007-08 FACILITY / CLASSROOM UPDATE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHRISSIE JAHN We are also pleased to announce that our classroom issues for the 2007-08 school year seem to be resolved. Last night (5/21/07), the MPUSD Board of Trustees voted 7:0 to approve the leasing of a relocatable (portable) to be placed on the Manzanita site and to share the costs with ISM. This allows our existing classrooms to remain where they currently are and our rising second sixth grade class to occupy the new relocatable, to be placed on the concrete pad across from Mr. Spedding’s portable.

The MPUSD board also showed strong support for modernizing the Hayes campus as soon as possible, allowing for our move there as early as summer 2008. While it is an ambitious schedule, MPUSD staff feels confident that this time line can be met. Thank you for all of your support throughout our negotiations.

3. UPCOMING PERFORMANCES: WELLESLEY WIDOWS AND TRIMESTER 3 ARTS NIGHT
WELLESLEY WIDOW PERFORMANCE AT ISM: WEDNESDAY, MAY 23RD AT 2:30 – 3:00 P.M. The Wellesley Widows are a thirteen member a cappella singing group who regularly tour the United States, providing their unique brand of entertainment. They have been singing together for over fifty years, making them one of the nation's oldest women's collegiate a cappella singing ensembles. First performing in 1949, they now have a wide repertoire, specializing in popular music from the 1930s to the present, including modern songs by Duran Duran, Shakira and Bon Jovi. They will be performing in ISM's multiuse room tomorrow (Wednesday, May 23rd) between 2:30 - 3:00 p.m. and will feature Anisha Gupta, the niece of ISM Board Chair Prashant Gupta. Thank you also to parent Brian Diamond for providing sound for this event.

B. TRIMESTER 3 ARTS NIGHT: THURSDAY, MAY 31ST AT 6:30 P.M. Please join us on Thursday evening May 31st beginning at 6:30 p.m. for our final Arts Night program of the year! Performance attire is the school uniform! Thank you! Come one, come all!

Drama performances by ISM Kindergartners and 1st graders will be not be taking place on May 31st, rather Miss Sarah has organized Kinders to perform their productions during regular K-2 assemblies. Ms. Carrie’s class was adorable this morning performing their version of When I Grow Up. Next Tuesday, May 29th, Miss Kim’s class will be center stage when they entertain us with their drama performance. In addition, both Grade 1 classes will be enriching the International Festival by performing their drama pieces in the ISM pod for all to enjoy! Plan on stopping by one or both of these venues to enjoy these student performances!

4. SURFS UP AT THE ISM BOOKFAIR, MAY 23RD TO JUNE 1ST: In surfing jargon, Cowabunga is the popular phrase, but during our upcoming Spring Book Fair, which starts tomorrow Wednesday, May 23rd through Friday, June 1st, we will be saying Cowabooka to celebrate this year’s Surfing theme! Today, the big Scholastic Book Fair truck, featuring Clifford the Big Red Dog, pulled up in front of ISM and a great wave of books arrived! Beginning at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, we invite you to stop by the library to wade through the book titles available for all ages. The library, a.k.a., the beach, will be open for your shopping pleasure during the following days and times:

All proceeds from this Spring Book Fair will go to further building classroom libraries as well as leveled reading class sets. Huge thanks go to Janice Barker and Yvette Satchell for coordinating this event and to parent volunteers Rosemarie Calpin, Christina Homami, Edith Johnson, Leslie Johnston, Leora Sanchez, and Nick Trachsel who will assist Janice and Yvette to staff the Book Fair. So, find your wet suit, grab your surf board, and stop by the Book Fair beginning May 23rd!

On Monday, May 21st, a kick-off event for the Book Fair, featuring a Surfboard Decorating contest for all grades, was held. For Grades Kindergarten through Grade 2, Ms. Basu’s 2nd graders won top prize earning them $30 in Book Fair credit for their classroom library! For Grades 3 – 5, Ms. Wharton’s 4th graders designed the winning board and also earned $30 in books for their classroom. Way to go! Honorable Mention awards were also given out to Miss Carrie’s Kindergartners and Mr. Riquelme’s 5th graders for their “way cool” surfboard designs. Each class earned $15 for their classroom library. Thank you to Janice Barker and Yvette Satchell for organizing this event and to all the classes who participated! But, parents, do not tell your kids yet as Miss Frizzle (of Magic School Bus fame) will make an appearance at tomorrow’s 3-5 assembly to announce the winners!

5. LIBRARY USAGE DURING ISM BOOKFAIR AND YEAR-END CLOSING PROCESS Please note that the Library will be closed for regular classroom visits during the Book Fair time period, Wednesday, May 23rd through Friday, June 1st. In addition, the Afterschool International (ASI) Program will be operating out of the multiuse room and the Pod (for homework help), to resume library usage on Friday, June 1st.

For the last two weeks of June, library volunteers headed by Nick Trachsel will be closing down the library for the summer, sending out overdue notices, collecting missing books and fines, etc. Parents, please remind your students to return all books to the library immediately to avoid receiving a notice or having to pay a lost book fee. Thank you!

6. UPDATE ON ISM’S ROV (REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLES) EXPLORERS TEAM: We are pleased to report a successful two days of testing last weekend (May 12 / 13) at Fisherman’s Wharf. Of course, there were a couple of setbacks (loss of two props on Saturday morning, and a power failure on Sunday morning), but isn’t that to be expected? The main lessons learned include: expect the best and prepare for the worst (bring two of everything); double check all fittings before taking the plunge (if it can come loose, it probably will).

We were very lucky in our estimation of buoyancy, both with respect to the tether line and the unit itself. On Sunday morning, a few of us went into deeper water, about twelve feet, and the ROV scooted around quite impressively. As the videos/photos indicate, the Hakuna Matata looks like a real ROV. Regards waterproofing, three cheers for Plasti-Dip. It worked marvelously. May it continue working marvelously . . .

Visitors are invited to view documentation of the ISM ROV Explorers Club test runs at www.becauseoftime.org/ISMROV/ROVPhotoGalleries.html .

The Club returned to Fisherman’s Wharf this past Saturday morning, 8:00 – 10:00 AM ish, and launched from the end of the wharf itself (south dock, near Rappa’s, where the dinghies are moored). This location offers excellent access to both the waters beneath the wharf (and into the forest of piles), and the waters facing the cove. The aim is to continue fine-tuning the ROV (especially with respect to buoyancy and balance), and to begin our stated mission: to explore the waters beneath the wharf. The team has agreed to restrict ourselves to the waters immediately around Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s just an ideal locale to begin this longer-term exploration of the sanctuary using student-design technologies.

14. LOOKING FOR..... : Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) TEACHER WISH LIST ITEMS: Dear ISM families, as we look forward to our 2007-08 school year, we wanted to alert parents to some of the bits and pieces teachers would like to see in their classrooms. Over the summer, families may come across articles in their own homes or in garage sales that can be transformed into treasures for the classroom or for the library. The items listed on the following ISM web page (teacherwishlist.html)list desired teacher items, so please take a look to see if you can provide any of these needed materials. We thank you for your help!

2) Empties 4 Cash RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: UPDATED INFORMATION: In the past week, we have received over $70.00 in revenue from this program, so it is indeed a regular revenue generator! We thank all of you who drop off your cartridges and make this program work! Alternately, we do have postage paid mailing envelopes available at the front desk so you can forward your cartridges to Empties 4 Cash directly if that is more convenient. Please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward their used inkjet cartridges to ISM! Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!
