We are pleased to announce that former Physical Education instructor, Julie Livingston, gave birth last month on April 23rd to a healthy eight pound, 20 inch long baby boy named “Brandon”! Both Julie, her husband, and Brandon are all doing very well and making the happy adjustment to parenthood!
Last Friday, many of us bid a sad farewell to the Parrish family, including mother Joan and sons, Bennett (Grade 5), Conrad (Grade 2), and Nolan (Kindergarten). Together with father Scott, the Parrishes were one of ISM’s original families, who tracked and supported our early progress, participated in Work Days prior to the school opening, served on various committees over the years, and were a tremendous asset to our community. Following a brief stop on the East Coast to rejoin Scott, the Parrish family will be relocating to Tbilisi, the capital and largest city in Georgia. Scott will be launching his new career as an American diplomat, representing U.S. interests abroad, and the whole family will be adjusting to everyday life in their new location. Georgia is a Eurasian country bordered by the Black Sea, Russia, Turkey and Armenia, and Azerbaijan. We will greatly miss the entire Parrish family, we wish them well, and look forward to hearing exciting news from them in the months to come!
With the proliferation of cell phones that we are seeing on campus by students of all grades, but especially the middle school age, we thought it wise to remind everyone of our ISM policy concerning cell phones on campus. Executive Director Chrissie Jahn distributed the following reminder to instructors last week:
It has come to my attention that cell phones on campus (during class and
recess) have become an issue once again. Please remind your students
that cell phones are only to be kept in the off position and in their
backpacks or locker during the school day. They are not to be in
pockets, desks, jackets, etc. If a student is caught with a cell phone
out during school hours, ANY staff member should confiscate the cell
phone and the student may retrieve it at the end of the school day. If you do
not feel comfortable keeping the phone for the day, it can be deposited
on my desk, forcing the student to come to me at the end of the day to
retrieve the cell phone.” In addition, please be aware that students are incurring a risk when bringing phones to campus as ISM staff cannot guarantee their safety. We certainly understand that many families depend on cell phone availability for before and after school communication, but we ask that students abide by our demands to keep phones secured in backpacks or lockers during the school day and that they are not used until students are off campus in the afternoon. Thank you!
Today was the first day of STAR testing for Grades 2 through 8. With the exception of Grades 4 and 6 today, all other classes kicked off their weeklong plus schedule with language arts testing – with students taking either the CAT/6 Reading & Language test or a part of the CST Language Arts test.
For the remainder of this week, all grades will be involved in STAR testing until 10 or 11 a.m. each morning. Once again, we remind parents and guardians to ensure that your child(ren) as well prepared for this testing schedule by making certain that students are well rested each night, well nourished each morning, and dropped off at school on time! Room parents are being asked to help coordinate snack rosters so that all classes can share a healthy snack during the test breaks. Examples of snacks include granola bars, pretzels, tangerines, juice boxes, and the like. For specific STAR testing questions, please contact Carol Evans, ISM’s Curriculum Coordinator, directly at cevans@ismonterey.org. Thank you for your cooperation!

A. ISM WELL REPRESENTED AT BIG SUR INTERNATIONAL MARATHON Whew! Where do we begin to celebrate our involvement with the Big Sur International Marathon event on Sunday, April 29th? First off, amazing kudos go to P. E. instructor Robby Fabry and Grade 3 instructor Devon Sigman as well as parents Melanie Allen (mother of Cobi, Gr. 7 & Logan, Gr. 4), and Janet and Jacques Melac (parents of Lucas, Gr. 2), all of whom successfully completed the Big Sur International Marathon! In addition, Grade 1 instructor Chantel Touryan and parent Tara Clark (mother of Jared, Grade 7 and Brian, Grade 5) participated in the Relay event held that day! Those of us who view a marathon as an unbelievable (and possibly unaccomplishable) feat are in awe of these folks’ accomplishments and were amazed at how phenomenal they all looked the following day! Kudos, kudos, kudos!
We are also pleased to announce that the participation of the 113 members of the ISM Big Sur Schools 5K team earned us…….(drum roll, please) a second place monetary award of $750 for the second highest team participation as a percentage of our enrollment. This win keeps our streak alive, in which ISM has won participation monies every year of the Schools 5K, beginning with Spring 2002! Thank you to all who braved the early morning hour to take part; without your participation, this award would not have been possible.
In addition, a big Hurray and thank you goes out to the 37 ISM community volunteers who worked at the BSIM Aid Station and supported the runners and walkers of the Big Sur Marathon on Sunday, April 29th. Everyone worked well together mixing, pouring and handing out sports drinks and water to the athletes passing through the Garrapata Aid Station. Both ISM students and parents participated in this event, including 4 friends who pitched in to help. All in all, their participation can expect to bring in nearly $2,800 to ISM! We thank Volunteer Coordinator Mary Welsh and her 37 recruits for their support and helping to financially benefit ISM. Wonderful work, everyone!!
To view pictures of ISM’ers at the Big Sur 5K and marathon, please follow the link below or visit the ISM website at:
www.ismonterey.org/index3.html
We thank parents who took these great pictures as well as parent volunteer / tech committee member Carrie Bretz for revitalizing the ISM website to include current photos and relevant curricular, staff, and schedule information. She has been doing an amazing job!
B. GRADE 5 HISTORY DAY TEAMS AT STATE COMPETITION During the Big Sur Marathon weekend of April 28th and 29th, two sets of Grade 5 History Day teams traveled to Long Beach, CA and competed in the California State History Day Finals in the 4th/5th Grade Poster division. Representing the Omaha Beach project were team members Reece Gagnon and Andrew Miles (and fellow students Sumner Healey and Justice Post who were unable to travel to Long Beach) and representing the Operation Pedro Pan team were Sean Burns, Suraya Essi, Reeve Grobecker and Taylor Hobbs. Although neither team was selected as a Finalist team, we are extremely proud of the research, presentation, and interview skills that all of these students displayed in Long Beach and know that the experience will greatly benefit them in future research projects. Congratulations!
C. PARENT JANICE BARKER HONORED AT LIGHTHOUSE FOR LITERACY DINNER On Tuesday, April 24th, Janice Barker, mother of 3rd grader Kasey, and one of our amazing community volunteers, was honored at the Lighthouse for Literacy Dinner held at the Monterey Beach Hotel. This event is sponsored by the Monterey County Reading Association and is designed to celebrate all those who “light the path to literacy”. Nominated by Executive Director Chrissie Jahn for her ongoing efforts at organizing annual book fairs (see item below!) and thereby, increasing the number of volumes in the ISM library, Janice joined like-minded individuals from thirteen area school districts to be honored for their important literacy, school and civic contributions. We are so fortunate to have someone like Janice who values literacy and supports it by hands-on efforts that yield great results each year for our students, our library, and even classroom libraries. Congratulations, Janice!
In surfing jargon, “Cowabunga” is the popular phrase, but during our upcoming Spring Book Fair, being held from Wednesday, May 23rd through Friday, June 1st, we will be saying “Cowabooka” to celebrate the Fair’s fun Surfing theme! On Tuesday, May 22nd, the big Scholastic Book Fair truck, featuring Clifford the Big Red Dog, will pull up in front of school and a great wave of books will arrive on our ISM shores. Beginning the following day, we invite you to stop by the library to wade through the book titles for all ages. The library, a.k.a., the beach, will be open for your shopping pleasure during the following days and times:
* Wednesday, May 23rd, 8 to 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., & 2:45 to 5:30 p.m.
* Thursday, May 24th, 8 to 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., & 2:45 to 5:30 p.m.
* Friday, May 25th, 8 to 9 a.m. & 2:45 to 5:30 p.m.
* Tuesday, May 29th, 8 to 9 a.m. & 2:45 to 5:30 p.m.
* Wednesday, May 30th, 8 to 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., & 2:45 to 5:30 p.m.
* Thursday, May 31st, 8 to 9 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. until the end of Arts program
* Friday, June 1st, 8-9 a.m.: Parents only Swim, which is a great time to do shopping without the little ones and surprise them with some new summer reading books!
All proceeds from this Spring Book Fair will go to further building classroom libraries as well as leveled reading class sets. Huge thanks go to Janice Barker and Yvette Satchell for coordinating this event and to parent volunteers Rosemarie Calpin, Christina Homami, Edith Johnson, Leslie Johnston, Leora Sanchez, and Nick Trachsel who will assist Janice and Yvette to staff the Book Fair. So, find your wet suit, grab your surf board, and stop by the Book Fair beginning May 23rd!

The Explorers Team is an ISM middle school initiative coordinated by 6th grade teacher, Tod Spedding. It is organized with the aim of applying student-designed and engineered technologies to the exploration of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).
Over the next year, the ROV Explorers Team will identify a series of five missions (likely of increasing complexity), and design the technologies required to execute those missions, not unlike the
work of NASA engineers and scientists. †We are, in a real sense, walking in the footsteps of ocean explorer Robert Ballard.
Each mission will be documented, and culminate with a public presentation of results, profiling both the processes leading up to and the products of our field work. Those interested will be able to track the progress of each mission via the 6th grade class website at the
following URL: www.becauseoftime.org/ISMROVExplore.html .
Inspired by a display seen at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, our first mission will be a survey by ROV of the bottom beneath three commercial wharfs: Monterey
Fisherman’s Wharf, the Monterey Commercial Wharf, and
the City of Santa Cruz Wharf. Central questions
include: How does what we observe on the bottom
reflect the context of the place, lying beneath a busy
commercial wharf? How might the tides/currents
particular to the setting influence what we observe on
the bottom?
From an engineering perspective, we ask: How do we
design an ROV to be saltwater worthy, especially with
respect to designing watertight fittings? What does
the ideal homebuilt lighting/video camera system look
like, given the setting? How does working in
saltwater influence buoyancy, and achieving neutral
buoyancy? Stay tuned for updates!

: Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) TEACHER WISH LIST ITEMS: Dear ISM families, as we look forward to our 2007-08 school year, we wanted to alert parents to some of the bits and pieces teachers would like to see in their classrooms. Over the summer, families may come across articles in their own homes or in garage sales that can be transformed into treasures for the classroom or for the library. The items listed on the following ISM web page (www.ismonterey.org/teacherwishlist) list desired teacher items, so please take a look to see if you can provide any of these needed materials. We thank you for your help!
2) Empties 4 Cash RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: UPDATED INFORMATION: In the past week, we have received over $70.00 in revenue from this program, so it is indeed a regular revenue generator! We thank all of you who drop off your cartridges and make this program work! Alternately, we do have postage paid mailing envelopes available at the front desk so you can forward your cartridges to Empties 4 Cash directly if that is more convenient. Please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward their used inkjet cartridges to
ISM! Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell,
Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they
are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges
either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from
damages and spills. Thank you!
