BI-WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF FOR
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2007

Welcome to ISM's 2006-07 bi-weekly newsletter covering Tuesday, February 26th - Friday, March 9th, 2007! The ISM news brief will now be updated twice a month and available to ISM families on our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each second Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns at 583-2165 or email at lburns@ismonterey.org. To submit newsbrief contributions, forward them per email by the Wednesday prior to the publication date.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found here.

1. WELCOME TO NEW STUDENT Please join us in welcoming Elisabeth Clausen, a new 7th grader, who is transferring to ISM, beginning today, Monday, February 26th. Elisabeth's entry into ISM will be made all that much easier as she is good friends with fellow 7th grader Amanda Weber who is happy to show her new classmate the ropes. Despite the more-than mid-year move, Elisabeth is excited to be making the switch to ISM! That certainly speaks well of our curriculum, students, and staff that new students throughout the year are eager to join ISM!

2. 2007-08 SCHOOL CALENDAR : The official school calendar for next year has now been approved by the ISM Board of Trustees during last week's monthly Board meeting. Hopefully, with its early publication, families will have ample time to plan their upcoming holidays accordingly. Community members will notice a few minor changes to the calendar compared to this year. Specifically: the first day of school is a Thursday, which eases students (and teachers) back into the school year; two full 'no school' days have been added to the calendar to provide time for staff development, preceded by two early dismissal days (half days) for staff planning; the two student-led conference days have been moved to Fridays, also preceded by an early dismissal Thursday for additional conference time; and the days directly preceding the Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday breaks are also early dismissal days. While we realize that no calendar will fit every family's needs, we believe that this calendar does better meet the needs of the school and, ultimately, the needs of the students.

3. SCHOOLWIDE ENRICHMENT MODEL (SEM) SESSION #3: CALL FOR INSTRUCTORS From Curriculum Coordinator Carol Evans: Dear ISM Community, Our third SEM session is ending next week on Friday, March 2nd. It is now time to think about class offerings for Session #4! The next Schoolwide Enrichment Model will be seven weeks in length, running from Friday, April 13th to Friday, May 25th; each class is offered Friday afternoons from 2:00 - 3:10 p.m.

We are interested in finding parent or community volunteers who can make a commitment to present a workshop on their personal area of expertise, hobby, or passion. We have student requests for sessions centering on sports, hands-on science, computers, photography, crafts and woodshop. If you are willing to lead a SEM class, please contact Carol Evans at cevans@ismonterey.org and provide the following information by Wednesday, March 14th: your name, class title, desired grade range (from Grade 1 - 8), maximum class size, phone number, email address, and the anticipated expenses related to your class. Please note: A small budget is available for SEM (below $100). We ask you to estimate your proposed expenditures and, if approved, request reimbursement by the last session. Thank you!

4. RETRIEVE RECENT "LOST & FOUND" ITEMS, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH, 3:00 - 6:00 P.M. // USED SCHOOL UNIFORM SALES, THURSDAY, MARCH 1ST, 6:30 P.M.

Following Tuesday's event, all unlabeled items in good condition will be washed and sold during the evening Arts Concert on Thursday, March 1st . (See item below as well as #10C.) To best ensure that students are able to get their clothing back, we highly recommend that ALL clothing items are labeled! Our kids seem to lose the "darndest" things!

Please drop off your CLEAN clothes on Wednesday, February 28th in the yellow hamper outside of the library. All clothes will be $1.00 and jackets will be $5.00. 5. ISM PLAYS HOST TO A SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER AT GRADES 3-5 MORNING ASSEMBLY: On Wednesday morning, February 28th at 9 a.m., ISM 3rd - 5th graders will host Mr. Mas Hashimoto at the morning assembly. Mr. Hashimoto will share the story of his experience in the Poston Japanese Internment Camp during World War II. He is a native-born American who, at the age of six, was evicted from his home in Watsonville and sent with his mother and brothers to spend the next two and a half years in an internment camp. Mr. Hashimoto says, "Because I looked like the enemy, I was treated like the enemy." He also draws a parallel between anti-Japanese prejudice of 1942 and anti-Moslem prejudice of today. Parents are invited to join Grades 3-5 to hear Mas Hashimoto's presentation in the multiuse room during this assembly.

13. LOOKING FOR..... : Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) FOREIGN LANGUAGE CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR THE ISM LIBRARY: Recent cataloging efforts revealed that we have children's books in our library printed in 15 different languages. What fun if, in honor of World Book Day on March 1st, we could add a lot more! Right now there are children's books in Greek, Russian, Japanese, Italian, German, Norwegian, Korean, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, Estonian, Dutch, and English. If you have another language to add to our International Book Collection, please drop your contributions by the library or Curriculum Coordinator Carol Evans' office. Thank you!

2) RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: To date, this program has been extremely successful, so we definitely encourage the ISM community to continue to support it by turning in your used printer cartridges to the front office. The monies we receive from this program help to offset office products purchasing, which directly supports student learning through availability of photocopy paper, toner, etc. So, please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward your used cartridges to us! ISM will then benefit by getting paid up to $4.00 for each empty inkjet cartridge that has a print head. Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!

ISM School Fund Raising News

This section is for news from the ISM Foundation and our Director of Advancement Lorraine Williby.
1. FAMILY FAIR SHARE PROGRAM UPDATE: ISM has learned from Carrie Miles, the ISM Foundation Treasurer, that our parents have now donated a total of $216,000 this academic year, which represents more than 70 percent of the parent community! We expect that following the presentations by ISM Board of Trustees Chairperson, Prashant Gupta, and ISM Foundation Chair, David Awerbuck, during the recent Mandatory Parent Meeting, parent and guardian contributions to the Family Fair Share program will continue to rise as more and more parents understand the "message of responsible giving" that is inherent to financing our unique international public charter school curriculum.

ISM is so grateful to the Foundation for their efforts to raise funds on behalf of ISM. Kudos to those parents who have contributed their Fair Share! Remember, these funds help fill the gap between State funding and our ability to provide a unique and challenging educational experience to our students.

2. WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007: The International School of Monterey's 4th Annual World Neighborhood Gala is fast approaching, on Saturday, April 14th, 2007 at the Monterey Hyatt Regency. Invitations have now been mailed out to the ISM parent community for this Mardi Gras-themed fundraising gala, so be on the lookout in your mailbox. If you do not receive an invitation by week's end, please contact Carrie Miles at clmiles33@aol.com . So, make your reservations and bring your dancing shoes!!

From Gala Chair Laura Alladeen: Greetings Everyone! We have just three short weeks until our Spring Break. We are still in need of more auction items, specifically, Art, crafts, vacation destinations, time shares, spa services, golf packages, frequent flyer miles, wine for the silent auction, (Magnums, etc) and for pouring, sporting event tickets, tours, family activities and more restaurants just to name a few. Perhaps you have a special talent or service you can offer, like cooking, cleaning, gardening, decorating or painting?

Once we return from our Spring Break, we will have just 2 weeks to finalize everything for the Gala! Every donation needs to be entered into our auction tracker program, which tracks/lists all of the donors, addresses, items donated, amount of items and solicitors. We then create packages, figure which items will be live or silent, print the bid sheets, prepare the catalog for printing, table top descriptions, etc. As you can see, there is a lot that has yet to be completed and your cooperation is greatly needed and appreciated. So, if you have a donation, please fill out your donation forms ASAP and forward them to Carrie Miles. If your item is perishable, we do not need it right now, just fill out the donation form at this time. Forms can be downloaded from our website at www.ismonterey.org/ism_foundation.html .

Reminder: All class baskets and art project information is also due by Friday, March 16th. WE DO NEED THE DONATION VALUE FORMS IN BY THIS DATE.

On another note: If you or someone else you know does not have a tangible item to donate, but would like to help, please consider a cash donation to help underwrite some of the Gala expenses, such as the dinner, the decorations or the band for example. This is a perfect time to ask close family members and or friends to help out. Their donation is tax deductible and they will be listed in the event catalog, on our website and in the Monterey Herald as sponsors of our event. Thank you for your time, understanding and cooperation! "Together We Can Make a Difference!" Please contact Laura Alladeen per phone at 455-9686 or by email at lsalladeen@sbcglobal.net .

3. WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007 - INSTANT WINE CELLAR: A highlight of our live auction has always been the "Instant Wine Cellar", created by the parents of ISM. It consists of over 100 eclectic bottles of wine moderately priced between $10 - $15 per bottle. This one item typically brings in $1500. We are asking each family to contribute one or two bottles of wine in this price range. For your convenience, there will be a "wine drop-off" on Friday, March 2nd before and after school. There will be someone in the parking lot to take your donation. You may also bring your donation to school and leave it in the office anytime. IMPORTANT: Please do not have your child carry wine onto the campus!

We are also looking for volunteers to help collect the wine bottles at the "wine drop-off" on March 2. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to collect bottles please contact Tim Rougeot at trougeot@gmail.com or 235-2744. Thank-you for your help.

4. WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007 - 50/50 DRAWING TICKET SALES: Report from Coordinator Lynn Richardson: As of last week, participating families had sold 85 tickets at a value of $740.00. Mr. D's third grade class is currently leading ticket sales within the Kindergarten-Grade 4 group with 25 tickets sold. Meanwhile, Ms. Burns' fifth grade class has sold 18 tickets, leading the upper grade class sales.
To increase ticket sales, Lynn suggests keeping tickets handy to have as you go about your normal routines, remembering to mention the 50/50 fundraiser to colleagues at your workplace, fellow attendees at a workshop or conference, vendors that you routinely frequent (i.e., the hairdresser, barber, store clerk, etc.) These type of sales are easier than you might imagine. Just as Laura Alladeen mentioned above, "If you do not ask, they will not buy" so feel empowered to ask....and let's increase the value of the 50/50 pot. Thank you!
