BI-WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF FOR
MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2007

Welcome to ISM's 2006-07 bi-weekly newsletter covering Monday, April 23rd - Friday, May 4th, 2007! The ISM news brief will now be updated twice a month and available to ISM families on our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each second Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns at 583-2165 or email at lburns@ismonterey.org. To submit newsbrief contributions, forward them per email by the Wednesday prior to the publication date.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found here.

1. 2007-08 FACILITIES UPDATE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHRISSIE JAHN Late last week, we received a letter from Dr. Marilyn Shepherd, the new Superintendent of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD). In this letter, she states she will be recommending to the MPUSD Board of Trustees at their Monday, April 23rd meeting that the District offer ISM two additional Kindergarten classrooms at the lower King campus for the 2007-08 school year. Pending board action, ISM would then be able to admit the next 20 people on the 2007-08 waiting list as early as Tuesday, April 24th.

Tonight’s board meeting will take place at Fitch Middle School, located on 999 Coe Ave in Seaside (right off of General Jim Moore Blvd). The agenda is available on their website at www.mpusd.k12.ca.us/board_agenda/2007/070423/070423-Agenda.pdf . Open session begins at 7 p.m. and there is a public comment session on non-agenda items, which, looking at tonight's agenda, will probably not occur before 9 p.m. The item regarding approval of additional classrooms for ISM is on the consent agenda, therefore classified as an agenda item, and cannot be spoken to during the public comment session on non-agenda items. The board will usually allow comments on agenda items, as they come up. So, for tonight's meeting, that may not happen before 10 p.m.

An item on the closed session agenda addresses "anticipated litigation," which ISM parents (and attorneys,) Christine Reed and Jeannine Nale, interpret as a response to their recent letter to Dr. Haffa. So, if you wish to speak to the MPUSD board regarding having our two Kindergarten classrooms on the Lower King campus, the appropriate time to do so will be PROMPTLY at 5:30 p.m.. Please plan on arriving at the meeting location, Fitch Middle School, no later than 5:25 p.m. Thank you!

2. S.T.A.R. TESTING WINDOW: MONDAY, MAY 7TH THROUGH TUESDAY, MAY 15TH This year’s S.T.A.R. testing window will be Monday, May 7th through Tuesday, May 15th. During this period, standardized achievement tests in Math and Reading/Language Arts will be administered to all students in Grades 2 through 8. Students in Grade 5 will also be tested in Science, while students in Grade 8 are tested in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Science. Testing begins first thing each morning, so it is important to have students arrive to school on time, be well rested, and nourished with a good breakfast. Room parents will be asked to help coordinate snack rosters so all classes can share a healthy snack during the test breaks.

Parents may want to discuss the testing experience with their students. The S.T.A.R. tests should not be a cause of anxiety and fear, but it is important that all students try to do their very best. If you have any questions about S S.T.A.R. Testing, please contact Carol Evans, Curriculum Coordinator.

B. GRADE 5 HISTORY DAY PROJECT MADE MORE PERSONAL This coming weekend of April 28th and 29th, two sets of Grade 5 History Day teams will be traveling to Long Beach, CA to compete in the California State History Day Finals competition. The team of Reece Gagnon, Sumner Healey, Andrew Miles, and Justice Post will be presenting their board on the 1944 D-Day Operation on Omaha Beach, while the team of Sean Burns, Suraya Essi, Reeve Grobecker and Taylor Hobbs will be presenting their project on Operation Pedro Pan, the exodus of Cuban children in early 1960. Both projects won top honors in the local Monterey County competition held in mid-March. The theme of this year’s competition was Triumph and Tragedy in History.

Since competing locally in March, both teams have been able to further improve their boards as well as identify direct sources that could provide greater relevance and insight into their topics. In the case of the Omaha Beach project, team members Reece, Sumner, Andrew and Justice have been fortunate to meet WWII / Omaha Beach veteran Lewis E. Johnson. A letter that he wrote to them is presented below. In addition, Oscar Pichardo, who came to the US with his brother in August of 1961 via Operation Pedro Pan and who currently lives in Southern CA, was thrilled to clear his schedule to meet up with Sean, Suraya, Reeve and Taylor this coming weekend. For these eight 5th graders, not to mention the rest of the 5th graders who participated in the very-worthwhile History Day project, history has really come alive for them as a result of this process! Please take a moment to read veteran Lewis Johnson’s touching letter below. Referenced in the letter are two Navy hats and a copy of a documentary filmed about him, which he sent to the boys.

"Dear Reece and Andrew: As a little token of my appreciation for the study that you are making Re: Omaha Beach D-Day, wear these caps with pride in memory of the fallen heroes that gave their all that day. There are not many of us left from WWII, so it is up to your generation to carry the torch of freedom. Freedom is not free. We paid a very high price for the freedom that we enjoy today. Pay tribute to all veterans from all wars, but especially the WWII veterans. "LEST THEY BE FORGOTTEN" is the motto of the crusade that Larry and I carry on.

Also enclosed is a DVD of my return to Normandy filmed 60 years after D-Day. You will see the German soldier, that on D-Day was trying to kill me and I was trying to kill him. He was 18 and I was 20. We are old men now and hold no animosity. Our regret is that the World has not learned its lesson against wars. You will see the walk through the American cemetery where there are 9,387 service men and women buried there. There is THE GARDEN OF THE MISSING that has a wall with 1,557 names of the missing in action. I hope that someday you can visit Omaha Beach and the cemetery. And as you gaze across those thousands of crosses and listen to TAPS being played, you will thank the vets for your Freedom.

I write to you young boys not as 11-year-olds, but as men who are the future of America. In a few years your education will be behind you and you will be seeking your role in life. I speak in high schools and I tell these young people to look around at their classmates; one of them may be the President of our Nation some day. DO NOT UNDERRATE yourselves, you are IMPORTANT and are the future of America.

If you feel so inclined, write to me once in awhile to let me know about your progress in life. I am truly interested in the youth of today. So hang tight, guys, and good luck on your project. Your friend, Lewis E. Johnson"

C. 3RD GRADER CHACE SIMMONS SHINES IN RECENT HORSE SHOWS Chace, a third grader in Mr. D’s class, recently competed in two back-to-back horse shows at Pebble Beach. On Sunday, April 1st she took home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in her classes to ultimately win a Reserve Championship in her division! The next weekend on Saturday, April 7th, Chace earned a high-point Championship by placing 3rd in one class and 1st place in two others!! Her diligence and hard work are paying off, as she is now competing regularly against older children as well as adults, always placing 3rd or higher. We are SO proud of Chace!

Chace is next slated to compete on Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th -- this time in two different divisions as she moves up to a tougher category. Anyone who wants to come out to watch or cheer her on is welcome; horse show gate passes for 17-mile drive are available.

However, we are in need of volunteers who can help with processing the books before they go onto the shelves. This is a great job for someone who needs flexible hours in his or her volunteer work. Nick Trachsel, our library chairperson, has willingly offered to provide training. If interested, please contact Carol Evans, ISM Curriculum Coordinator at cevans@ismonterey.org or stop by and visit Nick in the library. Thanks!

2) Empties 4 Cash RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: UPDATED INFORMATION: To date, this program has been extremely successful; we have now surpassed the $1,000.00 mark, so we definitely encourage the ISM community to continue to support it by turning in your used printer cartridges to the front office. Alternately, we do have postage paid mailing envelopes available at the front desk so you can forward your cartridges to Empties 4 Cash directly if that is more convenient. Please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward their used inkjet cartridges to ISM! Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!

1. WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007: Gala Update from Laura Alladeen on Tuesday, April 17, 2007:
WOW! What an evening! What an Event! What a Party!!! The words Elegant & Fun were used many times to describe our event. Everyone seemed to have a great time and many commented that it was the most fun Gala yet!

* First of all, I would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out and helped. The Gala could not have been as successful as it was without all your help, creativity, cooperation and support! Thank you!

* Second, I would like to thank all the parents, staff and board members who came and supported this event! Together We Made A Difference

* Congratulations to the Casey Family who won the 50/50 cash draw, winning $6,315.00! Another deserving ISM family wins!

Although we are still crunching the numbers, it looks as though we have netted close to $50,000.00 again this year! WOW! This is an impressive achievement in that we had lower attendance this year and the event was held in a different venue. Way to go!

If you missed out on this year’s event, stay tuned for next years! You will not want to miss it!
