TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2007

The ISM news brief will now be updated twice a month and available to ISM families on our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each second Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns at 583-2165 or email at lburns@ismonterey.org. To submit newsbrief contributions, forward them per email by the Wednesday prior to the publication date.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found here.

1. WELCOME TO ISM
A. ISM COMMUNITY WELCOMES NEW ADDITION!: Caitlin, a 3rd grader at ISM, is once again a big sister! Her baby brother, Hunter Cameron McClennan, was born last week on April 5th at 12:19 p.m. He is a 19 inch, 7 pound 3 ounce "bundle of joy"! Dad, Mike McClennan, is happy to report that both "Mommy and Baby are [doing] fine!" Congratulations, McClennan family!

B. NEW 5TH GRADER TO JOIN ISM: Mr. Riquelme's 5th grade class will be receiving a new student, Hsiao-Wen Chang, starting tomorrow, Wednesday, April 11th. She is filling the spot vacated by Angela Castillo, who moved out of the area prior to the Spring Break. Hsiao-Wen has had the opportunity to visit ISM and her parents have dialoged extensively with ISM staff over the past several weeks to determine if this transfer was appropriate for their family. We are pleased that Hsiao-Wen is joining ISM and we look forward to getting to know her and her parents better in the near future.

C. DANIELLE FOGLE JOINS ISM AS NEW STAFFER: We are pleased to also welcome Ms. Danielle Fogle as our new Instructional Aide for Grades 6 - 8 for the remainder of the 2006-07 school year. She replaces Robby Fabry who has taken over the position of Physical Education instructor from Julie Livingston, who is now on maternity leave, pending the birth of her first child this month. Danielle Fogle was on campus in the weeks prior to the Spring Break, serving as an enthusiastic, "can do" substitute teacher and ISM students were thrilled to see "Miss Danielle" subbing in their classroom. She comes to us from Sylvan Learning Center where she served in a Director role. We are also pleased to announce that Danielle Fogle has also accepted the position of Grade 6 instructor for next year, team-teaching with Mr. Tod Spedding. She will provide Language Arts and Social Sciences instruction, while Mr. Spedding will lead instruction in Math and Science - much like the format for our current 5th grade program. Welcome, Danielle!

2. UPDATE ON STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS The ISM Board, strategic planning committee, and consultant have been busy laying the groundwork for an inclusive strategic planning process over the next several months. This has led to the creation of a framework for the development of the plan. You will find it posted on the Board Page of the ISMonterey.org website at www.ismonterey.org/Media/StrategicPlanningFramework/ISMstratplan070316.pdf. We will fit the pieces of the strategic plan into the framework as we progress, so ISM community members will see updated versions of the document over the course of our planning. The final version will become the official plan.

Your Role: The ISM Board recognizes its responsibility to map a strategic plan for the school's future. As such, all board members will involve themselves deeply in the process, and, ultimately, the board will approve the plan. Along the way, the board needs and values your involvement as members of the ISM Community. After all, this school belongs to all of us! We know that you are all busy, so we ask only that you participate in the town hall meetings, surveys, representative workgroups, and email exchange to the extent that you can and want. You can lend your voice, or trust that others will represent you well.

Today's Opportunity: Today we invite you to review the planning framework itself and the sections up to the red Current Progress bar, then email your thoughts and input to strategic@ismonterey.org.

What's Coming Next: Several groups -- parents, teachers, staff, and administrators-- will have the opportunity to select representatives to three Working Groups that will make up the Strategic Advisory Team. You will receive information on the volunteer/nomination and selection processes for your group shortly. You will also receive an invitation to an online survey in early April asking you to rate the importance of specific areas of improvement recommended in various school review reports. The data from these surveys will ultimately help shape the strategic commitments in our plan.

You are invited to a town hall meeting in the ISM multiuse room on Wednesday, April 18th, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. to discuss the school identity [mission, vision, etc.] to consider whether it needs revision as part of strategic planning. The current version is available at www.ismonterey.org/Media/StrategicPlanningFramework/ISMstratplan070316.pdf.

Email Updates: We will now send an update email at least every two weeks to keep you posted on our strategic planning progress. As we have done today, we will occasionally ask you to review specific things, and to email strategic@ismonterey.org with your input. Of course, as valued members of the ISM community, we welcome you to email your thoughts to that address at any time. Thanks in advance for your input! The Strategic Planning Committee of the ISM Board

3. CELEBRATING SUCCESS:
A. 6TH - 8TH GRADERS SUCCEED AT COUNTY SCIENCE COMPETITION We have much cause for celebration as ISM Middleschoolers performed exceedingly well as this year's 2007 Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair! Held last month at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) during the weekend of Friday, March 16th - Sunday, March 18th, 50 ISM students participated in this county-wide competition, 21 students received awards in the Junior category of the Fair, and 3 ISM students qualified for the California State Science Fair and the Discovery Channel young scientist challenge!

The Monterey County Office of Education, the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, the Lyceum of Monterey County, CSUMB, as well as community partners sponsor this event. As described in the MCOE website, "students display their research projects [during the fair] and present their findings orally and through written journals to a team of scientists who volunteer as judges. Through interactions with the participants, these judges confirm the students' understandings of the scientific concepts and the research methods involved in their projects. The judges also will offer practical and positive feedback regarding their application of the scientific method to a problem, encouraging them to improve their future scientific research efforts."

With that as background, Grade 8 instructor David Brandau enthuses that "no other Middle School in the County had more student participants than ISM and no other middle or high school in the County had more students receive awards than ISM!" That is quite an accomplishment! We certainly want to take a moment to thank all of our super supportive parents who assisted and guided their children through the scientific process. Additionally, "thank you" to all of our ISM volunteer evaluators who prepared our students for the county fair competition. Especially, we say "congratulations" to all ISM students who completed a science fair project; they have learned plenty through the process, and taught each other so much about science. All ISM students who participated entered incredible projects at the county fair and are all winners in our eyes!

We certainly do want to highlight those students who were selected for awards. They are:
* 3rd Place - Cobi Allen, Ellie Beckett, Jamie Berg, Cassandra Curatolo, Enrique Garcia, Andres Jimenez, Kevin Lin, Will Perkins, Misha Polovneff, Alyssa Seva'aetasi, Emily Shifflett, and Anna Welsh;
* 2nd Place - Greg Diamond, Dylan Essert, Nick Evans, Alyssa Hicks, Demar McMillan, and Ruby Sanchez;
* 1st Place - Jared Clark, Victoria Hutchins, and Amanda Weber;
* US Navy/US Marine Award- Kevin Lin, Will Perkins, and Misha Polovneff;
* Association for Women Geoscientists Award - Victoria Hutchins and Amanda Weber;
* CSUMB Environmental Science Award - Victoria Hutchins and Amanda Weber;
* Monterey County Agricultural Education Award - Victoria Hutchins and Amanda Weber;
* Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge Award - Jared Clark, Victoria Hutchins, and Amanda Weber;
* California State Science Fair- Jared Clark, Victoria Hutchins, and Amanda Weber will be packing their bags to represent ISM and compete at the 56th annual California State Science Fair which will be held in Los Angeles next Month on May 21st and 22nd! Congratulations to all winners and a special "good luck" to Jared, Victoria, and Amanda! Kudos to all of you for your hard work!

B. TRIMESTER 2 HONOR ROLL Sixteen 8th graders made Trimester 2 honor roll and two more were very close. Therefore, eighteen 8th graders have earned the privilege of assisting in ISM classrooms and expanding the inter-grade mentorship that we started earlier this year. They will be available to help out on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:40 to 3:10 p.m., beginning April 9th. Kudos to all Honor Roll recipients!

C. 8TH GRADER SHINES AT MONTEREY COUNTY SPELLING BEE 8th grader Catrina Fuentes competed against 44 other students in Sunday's 12th annual countywide Spelling Bee, held at Hartnell College's Western Stage Main Theater in Salinas. With a determined spirit, Catrina completed the competition in fine fashion out spelling 39 other youngsters to win 4th place! Way to go, Catrina!

4. SCHOOLWIDE ENRICHMENT MODEL (SEM) SESSION #3: CALL FOR INSTRUCTORS From Curriculum Coordinator Carol Evans: Our fourth SEM, School Enhancement Model, session starts this Friday, April 13th and continues through May 25th. We have some exciting classes in store this session, to include: Cheerleading,, Ceramics, Creative Writing, Computer Skills, Cookie Decorating, and CSI Detectives . . . and that is only the list of SEMs that begin with the letter "C". We thank all those community members who have volunteered to be a SEM provider; without your assistance, this enrichment element of the ISM curriculum would not be possible!

5. BIG SUR SCHOOLS 5K: Thank you to the 113 ISM community members who registered to take part in this year's Big Sur Schools 5K! The event is just one of many held as part of the Big Sur International Marathon; it will take place on Sunday, April 29th, beginning bright and early at 7:40 a.m. at the Carmel Crossroads. This year's ISM deadline to register was Thursday, March 7th by 4 p.m. so that the forms could be finalized in the database and the necessary "tallying" completed prior to being forwarded to the Monterey County Office of Education (M.C.O.E.) by the March 8th deadline. We were able to meet this timetable with support of the following parent volunteers: (1) Menka Panchal who conducted outreach phone calls to previous participants as well as early database work; (2) Elissa McLaurin who put in hours finalizing the database on March 6th & 7th; and (3) Esther Hobbs who delivered the forms to M.C.O.E. in Salinas and worked with Schools 5K staff to ensure accuracy of our packet.

Although the ISM team is smaller (as a percentage of our enrollment) this year than in year's past, we are still well placed to compete for one of the various Participation awards given out by the Big Sur Marathon organization. In addition, it is exciting to see so many people (both students and parents) return year after year to take part in this event! It really is a great opportunity to bond with one another as community members and family members, while supporting ISM and getting exercise, fresh air, and rejuvenation! Thank you again for all who are participating and we will see you on the track on Sunday, April 29th.

6. ISM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ASSIST WITH BIG SUR MARATHON EVENT The Big Sur International Marathon taking place on Sunday, April 29th is offering ISM community members (who are not already signed up to participate in the Big Sur Schools 5K event) a great opportunity to get in lots of volunteer hours and bring in needed funds to ISM! You can be part of this exciting day by signing up to help out at one of the "Aid Stations" on the race course. Volunteers will need to be ready to go at 5:30 a.m. on that day and stay until about noon or 1:00 p.m. We will be handing out water, sports drinks, and other needed aids to the participants of the marathon, 21 mile walk and 10 mile walk at the Garrapata aid station. Your volunteer hours will count towards ISM volunteer hours AND ISM will receive $10 for every hour worked by volunteers. Prepare to have an inspirational day on our gorgeous coast and help the participants and ISM at the same time! It really is a "win, win" deal! To volunteer or for more information, please contact ISM parent and coordinator Mary Welsh at mcwelsh@redshift.com or per phone at 644-0841.

7. REMINDER TO LOG IN VOLUNTEER HOURS Speaking of mandatory volunteer hours from the item above, Volunteer Coordinator, Ellen Gaucher, reminds community members to please remember to log in your earned Volunteer Hours in the log book on a weekly basis. Organized by student, this binder is located in the admin office. It is important to note that signing into ISM as a "Visitor or Volunteer" on the clipboard does not eliminate the need to register your hours for volunteering. They serve separate purposes: one is to know who is on campus at all times, for safety purposes, and the second is the appropriate means of tracking one's volunteer efforts. Each month, volunteer Edith Johnson will remove the log sheets in order to tally the individual hours. Should you have questions regarding your hours-to-date, please feel free to contact Edith directly at edithjo1@yahoo.com . Thank you!

8. ASI SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE!: ASI summer camp forms are being sent out today, Tuesday, April 10th! This year we will be offering our two most popular camps in June 2007. 14. LOOKING FOR..... : Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) ADDITIONAL LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS: Book donations continue to pour into the library and our book count now stands close to 7000 volumes! However, we are in need of volunteers who can help with processing the books before they go onto the shelves. This is a great job for someone who needs flexible hours in his or her volunteer work. Nick Trachsel, our library chairperson, has willingly offered to provide training. If interested, please contact Carol Evans, ISM Curriculum Coordinator at cevans@ismonterey.org or stop by and visit Nick in the library. Thanks!

2) HOUSE SWAPPING OPPORTUNITY IN SHANGHAI THIS SUMMER: Dear Colleagues: My wife and I are teachers at Concordia International School in Shanghai, China and we are interested in "swapping" homes with someone in the Bay Area for a couple of weeks during the summer of 2007. We have a very large four-bedroom/3 bath apartment with two large balconies, a huge kitchen, and a live-in maid (who speaks English). We live in a tree-lined residential area of Shanghai, within walking distance of Starbucks, Papa Johns Pizza, Carrefour shopping center, Decathlon Sports complex, and countless restaurants and clubs. Our apartment is in a gated community and the community center has a swimming pool, exercise/weight room (plenty of treadmills), yoga and martial arts classes, and two indoor playgrounds (including an outdoor playground and a huge sandbox). All in all, it is VERY plush, and in a fantastic location. We would love to find another teacher or teachers who want to "swap" for a short time (1 week or two weeks). We want to visit family for a week or two during the summer, and it would be nice to stay in a real "home" versus a hotel. We have two children, ages 6 and 2, but they are very well behaved and delightful. If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact us at davidg@ciss.com.cn. Sincerely, David Gertz, c/o Concordia International School Shanghai (999 Mingyue Road, Jinqiao, Pudong, Shanghai 201206, China).

3) Empties 4 Cash RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: UPDATED INFORMATION: To date, this program has been extremely successful; we have now surpassed the $1,000.00 mark, so we definitely encourage the ISM community to continue to support it by turning in your used printer cartridges to the front office. Alternately, we do have postage paid mailing envelopes available at the front desk so you can forward your cartridges to Empties 4 Cash directly if that is more convenient. Please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward their used inkjet cartridges to ISM! Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!

ISM School Fund Raising News

This section is for news from the ISM Foundation and our Director of Advancement Lorraine Williby.
1. WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007: It's hard to believe that the International School of Monterey's Fourth Annual World Neighborhood Gala is now just at week's end - this coming Saturday, April 14th, 2007 at the Monterey Hyatt Regency! Gala Chair Laura Alladeen writes: Greetings everyone! I hope you enjoyed your recent Spring Break.

ISM continues to rank among the top schools in Monterey County with an API score of 859 for 2006. Our students continue to excel. It is for this reason that we must continue to help raise money for our school. For the past three years, the annual Gala event has netted approximately $160K for our school, and our children. We have chosen this as our premiere fundraiser. Perhaps next year, it will be something different. But for this year, our fourth year, it is important that we have the support of all of the parents, staff and board members. Every school does fundraising to help raise money to help underwrite curricular and administrative costs. If you have not yet attended a Gala before, or even if you have, please consider attending this one, this year. It is not too late to send in your RSVP!!! You can drop it off in the front office (Family Fair Share Box) located on the wall next to Karen's desk.

If you have signed up to volunteer the day or evening of the event, please contact Carrie Miles at 261-4218 to confirm your placement and time or to answer any questions you may have.

We have a wonderful evening planned including, dinner, dancing and magic! It is a Mardi Gras theme, so here's your chance to get dressed up and have some fun. It is going to be a great party; we look forward to seeing many of you there on Saturday. Please help support our efforts in making this event successful. "Together We Can Make a Difference!"

2. WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007 - 50/50 DRAWING TICKET SALES: Advice to students and families: Lynn Richardson and Denise LaFontaine, co-coordinators for the Gala tickets sales, report that over $7000 in tickets have been sold, which means that the drawing ticket winner will be taking home over $3500! Just a reminder: the winner of the drawing does not need to be present for the drawing, so if you are not planning to attend the Gala, but still want to "try your luck" at winning the 50/50 drawing, tickets sales have been extended to Friday, April 13th. We are still hoping that the ISM community can rally to sell $10,000 in ticket sales; there is still time!
At this writing, Ms. Wharton's 4th graders are taking the lead in the K-4 class competition with nearly 150 tickets sold, while Mr. Spedding's 6th graders are tops in the 5-8 group. The two winning classes in this competition will earn a fantastic pizza party! The sales noted above do average to only three tickets per student in the lower grades and only one ticket per student in the upper grades. We can do better than that, so with only four more selling days available, ASK everyone you know - neighbors, friends, colleagues, etc., and let's expand the pot significantly by Friday! Please turn in ALL ticket stubs and proceeds to the collection box in the admin office by Friday. Please also return any un-used tickets to the front office so we can sell them the night of the event. Thank you for your support!

3. BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION COMPETITION: Boxtops Coordinator, Laurie deVara writes: Hello All! Congratulations go out to Ms. Wharton's 4th grade class! They were the recent winner in the latest Boxtops classroom contest with a grand total of 346 boxtops submitted! One more contest will be held this school year, so please keep on clipping and submitting to your respective classrooms. Thanks to all ISM families who have contributed to this fundraising program!
