Welcome to ISM's 2006-07 bi-weekly newsletter covering Tuesday, September 26th - Friday, October 6th, 2006! This is a change from previous years' communications, which were available each Monday. The ISM news brief will now be updated twice a month and available to ISM families on our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each second Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns
at 583-2165 or email at lburns@ismonterey.org . To submit newsbrief contributions, forward them per email by the Wednesday prior to the publication date.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found

Effective today, we are now at full enrollment with the admission of Harvey Lao to Mr. Riquelme's Grade 5 class! Harvey is already familiar with ISM as both he and his brother, Vincent (currently on the 2006-07 waiting list), attend weekly afternoon chess classes with Lev Frenklakh (see item #12A below). Harvey represents our 336th student and we are thrilled he is joining us from Marshall Elementary. When asked last week by Business Administrator Lisa Griffin Burns what the critical factor was in making the decision to join ISM, Harvey's dad replied "that it was the 8th grade!" He was pleased to have a stable and challenging school for his son for the next four years! Please join us in welcoming Harvey, his brother, Vincent, his father, Yong Lao, and his mother, Ming-Chiann Chou, to our ISM community!
After an intensive self-study year, the combined Council of International Schools (CIS) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation team will be here next week to speak with community members. The nine-member team will be looking at our self-evaluation of our Philosophy and Objectives, Curriculum, Governance and Management, Staff, Student Support Services, Resources, and Student and Community Life. This is not an evaluation, rather an observation, of our policies and procedures, what we have recognized as strengths and areas in need of improvement, as well as what steps we will undertake to implement changes. Please give them our typical warm ISM welcome; in other words, continue with "business as usual."
Our 6th - 8th graders returned weary, rumpled, and in need of laundry services, but full of wonderful experiences and memories following their week-long camping in the Stanislaus National Forest. They called "Camp Jack Hazard" home for the week, with the 7th and 8th graders bunking down in cabins, while the intrepid 6th graders sought shelter and sleep in a CJH tent city! Camp Jack Hazard is a YMCA camp located about 50 miles east of Sonora, CA. During their stay in the "wilderness", our students were supervised by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade instructors - Mr. Spedding, Miss Shephard, and Mr. Brandau - as well as Sarah Benbow (Drama), Carol Evans (Curriculum Coordinator), and Neli Volante (Counselor). Additionally, a team of nearly 20 amazing volunteers served as drivers, chaperones, and ultimately, rescuers as one of our brave 7th graders sustained a serious knee injury. We want to extend a warm "thank you" to all the volunteers who made this trip a reality and a special thanks to Shirley Dickinson, Barry Perkins, and Patrick Tregenza for providing invaluable health and safety services all week! From all accounts, the Camp Jack Hazard experience exceeded everyone's expectations and was wonderfully worthwhile. The only critique was the camp food, as our hearty middleschoolers were looking forward to home cooking and perhaps a take-out pizza! This middle school retreat serves as a curricular enhancement, while also bonding our students in teamwork. We are proud of everyone involved; staff, students, and parent volunteers all outdid themselves to make this retreat especially successful!
Instrumental music classes for the 06-07 school year have started, but it is not too late to sign-up! Instruction is offered in VIOLIN, CELLO, FLUTE, CLARINET, TRUMPET and TROMBONE. At present the schedule is: Mondays at 2:40 p.m. for Intermediate Winds; Tuesdays at 8:20 a.m. for Beginning Winds and at 2:40 p.m. for Advanced Strings; Wednesdays at 11:35 a.m. for Beginning Strings and at 2:40 p.m. for Intermediate Strings. This schedule is subject to change depending on enrollment. Please contact Instrumental Music instructor, Mr. William G. Gee, if your child is interested in playing a musical instrument during our school day music program.
All involved in this year's first-ever Usborne Read-A-Thon and related pledge drive have been completely overwhelmed by the response from ISM students, parents, and supporters! That is such an understatement as we report the following stats: total minutes read by ISM Kindergartners through 8th graders are ...drum roll, please.. 122,763 (one hundred twenty-two thousand seven hundred sixty-three) minutes; and the amount of pledge monies collected is ...... nearly $15,000! Reminder: all of the money collected will directly benefit reading services at ISM through donations to students themselves, classrooms, and the ISM library. Thank you to all the students, parents, relatives, and neighbors who so generously supported this program. Join us in extending a heartfelt thanks to parent volunteers Janice Barker, Barbara Okamura, Elissa McLaurin, and Venus Watson for helping to tally these remarkable results; it's been several long days of minute and money collection and tallying! For more information about Usborne Books, visit their website at www.UsborneBooksmart.com ).

The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD) has done it again! Last year,
the organization collaborated with ISM students to create our native plant
garden located alongside the administration building in celebration of Earth Day 2006. This past week the District - with the amazing help of parent and employee Tim Jensen -- donated materials to build six garden boxes that will house a vegetable garden, just in time for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to participate in Garden Day as part of the HELP (Health Eating Living Principles) Pilot Program at ISM. Our students will be helping to maintain the garden all year and plan to provide lettuce to the fresh lunch program on campus every Friday.
Traditionally, we will welcome parent contributions to this section; please let us know if your child has done something of interest to the community at large, i.e., won an award, pursued a unique hobby, volunteered with a non-profit on a noteworthy project, etc. Email text and photo contributions to editor Lisa Griffin Burns at least 4-5 days prior to an updated newsbrief document.

A. AFTERSCHOOL INTERNATIONAL (ASI) FALL BREAK CAMPS: Another October break is almost here and ASI has two camps lined up for students to enjoy. Week #1, Monday, October 9th through Friday, October 13th, is entitled Creative Cooking and will be guided with gusto by Miss Lisa Wichael-Loomis and Miss Sarah Benbow. Students will plan menus, make meals, and host a Friday party for family and friends. The cost for this camp is $150, including snacks and lunches.
To get youngsters in the Halloween mood, Week #2, Monday, October 16th through October 20th, will feature Haunted Holiday Fun under the direction of Mrs. Sally Burns and Miss Barbara Peters. Students will join them for a week of Halloween and Day of the Dead activities and projects. On Wednesday, October 18th, students will also venture out on a Halloween themed field trip (destination still pending). The cost for this camp is $125 for the week.
Space is limited for both camps. A minimum of 20 students is needed for both camps to be offered. All camp sign-ups are due next week by Wednesday, October 3rd, by 5:00. No late registrations will be accepted!
B. NATURE CAMP WITH THE MPRPD & YMCA: If you are a 5th, 6th, or 7th grader who wanted to attend Nature Camp this summer, you have another chance to catch the fun during the upcoming fall break, Monday, October 16th through Friday, October 20th. The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD) has partnered with the YMCA of the Monterey Peninsula to bring you a full week of Nature Camp. Fieldtrips to parks and preserves, hands-on activities, and an overnight adventure on Thursday, October 20th will provide memories to last a lifetime! The cost is $180 for the week and scholarships are available. Drop-off and pick-up will be at the YMCA of the Monterey Peninsula located at 600 Camino El Estero in Monterey. For more information or to register, please call 373-4167.
A. AFTERSCHOOL INTERNATIONAL (ASI): ASI bills for the month of October are now ready for ASI parents. All payments are due by Friday, October 6th. If payments are not received by this time, unpaid accounts will incur the normal $5.00 per day late fee beginning Monday, October 23rd. When making payments, please clearly mark on the check's memo line what the payment is for and the student or students to which it applies.
As a reminder, all payments for either the ASI or Fresh Meal programs should be made payable to "ISM".
B. FRESH MEAL PROGRAM Lunch menus for October 2006 are now available! If your child is interested in lunch for the first week of October, please note that the menus are due by this Wednesday, September 27th. For lunches following the break (week of October 23rd), menus will be due Wednesday, October 4th. Please remember no late menus will be accepted!
Also due to the fall break, please look for November menus to be available Tuesday, October 3rd, as well. The November menus will be due by Wednesday, October 25th for the following week. Please remember all menus need to have the student's name, dates marked, and money attached. Each month several menus arrive without one, or more of these very important things, which often results in the student missing out on their favorite lunch. Thank you!
Should you have any questions or need any type of information at all about the Fresh Lunch program or the Afterschool International (ASI) programs, it is important that you email Ms. Lisa Wichael-Loomis directly at lwloomis@ismonterey.org
or stop and see her in the library (located at the rear of the admin building). For more efficient handling of your inquiries, we request that parents do not email lunch or ASI questions to the front office via kkushel@ismonterey.org . Thank you so much!

Following the assembly, Mr. Judd has graciously agreed to meet with our 6th graders in Mr. Spedding's classroom to field follow-up questions.
Edwin Joe Judd has spent 30 years on the staff of UNICEF around the world. "Joe" Judd is an informal fellow, with extensive knowledge and experience dealing with children's issues around the world. C. FAMILY ASSOCIATION MEETING - Thursday, September 28th, 6:30 - 8 p.m.: This organization, headed by parent Ellen Gaucher, assists ISM administrators and staff in coordinating all volunteer efforts on campus as well as ISM special events, ranging from the Welcome Coffees, to the Back to School night listed above, to holiday celebrations, to Schoolwide evening concert events, and more! Those of you who are new to our school have already seen an example of this group's efforts when you recently completed the "Volunteer Opportunities" form at registration. This group of parents will be reviewing these forms to see how your individual skills and talents can best serve our campus-wide needs for volunteer support. The Family Association members are always looking for more parents to get involved in volunteer coordination at this level. Reminder, all ISM families are required to contribute three hours (plus one additional hour for each additional child) per month, so plan on stopping by this monthly meeting to contribute your talents!
D. FREE SATURDAY RUN GROUP - Saturday, September 30th, 9:00 a.m.: More and more ISM families continue to join Mr. Robby's free Saturday morning run program at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove! As a reminder, youngsters who participate in this Saturday morning running club are eligible to earn double "Just Run" points if they come with a parent. Once again, this group is open to all ISM families, staff, and friends interested in supporting one another's fitness goals through running. Come and help build a new tradition for our wonderful school!
E. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS ASSESSMENT (ISA) TESTING - WEEK OF October 2nd - 6th: Students in Grades 3-8 will be taking the International Schools' Assessment in Reading, Math, and Written Language during the week of October 2-6. Administration of the tests typically takes two morning sessions. ISM conducts the ISA test as well as the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) as using two different tests allows for multiple perspectives on student learning and achievement. The ISA also makes it possible for us to compare our students' performances against those of other international schools.
Standardized testing is not solely about the progress of individual students. Schools and teachers use the results of standardized tests to assess their own programs and to formulate practical improvement. Here at ISM, we want our students to take the assessment seriously. We ask that students get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast before taking the International Schools' Assessment. If you have questions or concerns about this testing, please contact Carol Evans at cevans@ismonterey.org .
F. GRADE 6 FAMILY HISTORY PROJECT OPEN HOUSE AND POTLUCK DESSERT - Thursday, October 5th, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., computer pod: Hear Ye, O, Hear Ye, History Buffs, and Buffets! Please stop by and look for those lost treasures of yours.
We will also be accepting CLEAN, uniform items that are in GOOD CONDITION (no stains, rips, worn knees) for donation to our next Uniform Sale. The Yellow Collection Hamper will be outside of the Library during the week of October 2nd through 6th. The next Uniform Sale will be on Tuesday, October 31st during our Halloween Festivities!
G. FALL BREAK: MONDAY, OCTOBER 9TH - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20TH
H. OCTOBER SAT WORK DAY - Saturday, October 28th, 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.: This October work day, due to the Fall break, will take place on the fourth Saturday, not the second Saturday, of the month. It will still serve as an official "work party" to tackle a few campus-related projects that we simply cannot successfully accomplish during the busy school week. It is also an excellent opportunity for working families to donate volunteer hours to ISM on a monthly basis. For those interested, please come next month, bring your wonderful attitude as well as essential tools, such as a hand drill, hammer, screws, nails, a level, sponges, buckets, and similar items. Chairpersons for this event rotate throughout the months; however, Business Administrator Lisa Griffin Burns is the primary contact for Saturday Work Days. To register interest to serve as chairperson one month or to see how you can help, contact her at lburns@ismonterey.org.
I. HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION - Tuesday, October 31st, after lunch Once again this year, the ISM campus will be converted into a ghoulishly fun Halloween zone, complete with Halloween costume and pumpkin carving contests, trick-or-trunking stops, seasonal activities sure to bemuse and possibly, befuddle, and -hold the presses- an emphasis on healthy snacks. As ISM has been chosen as a pilot school for the HELP (Healthy Eating Lifestyle Principles) program, we will be extending the notion of healthy eating to our Halloween plans. More details to follow! Start planning your costume and pumpkin designs now, however!

For that day, regular classroom library visits for Grades K (Turner) and 4 (St. Germain), and Grades 6-8 will not be taking place. In addition, the Afterschool International program may be relocated to the multiuse room and the computer pod. Thank you.

Students learn the Korean Martial art of Taekwondo along with the traditional values and discipline renown in the study of martial arts. Studies have shown that students who pursue martial arts tend to develop improved self-esteem, character, self-discipline, and higher grades in school!
Master Rogers has been providing this program at ISM for the past two years, he is highly qualified not only in the art of Taekwondo, which he studied and promoted to 4th degree master in Seoul Korea, but also possesses a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology, Sport Psychology and Higher Education. One of our former beloved Spanish teachers, Senorita Candia, has contacted us for help. There is a Bolivian exchange student, and friend of the family, stuck in Washington, D.C. with no school at the moment. Her name is Narayani Rivera Teran, she is 16, very bright, a vegetarian, and a senior in high school. Her sponsoring agency made a mistake in school assignments and has told her she cannot stay in the States with her family; she is currently staying with an aunt. If any family has ever considered taking in an exchange student or would like to hear more from families that have, including our own Executive Director, Chrissie Jahn, please contact Mrs. Jahn at 583-2166 or cjahn@ismonterey.org .
: Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) EGG CARTONS: ISM's art instructor, Karen Welch, is currently collecting paper egg cartons to make paper mache pulp. If ISM community members would like to recycle their egg cartons, please bring them art room ASAP! Thank you!
2) Recycling of Printer Cartridges Yields Payoff: To date, we have received over $700 through this innovative, earth-friendly program! The monies we receive can then help to offset office products purchasing, which directly supports student learning through availability of photocopy paper, toner, etc. We are super enthusiastic to continue this program, so please spread the word to family members, colleagues, etc and forward your used cartridges to the admin office. New this year: we can also provide parents with individual mailers for home use, so there is no need to bring cartridges into the office. These empty cartridges that we - as a community - typically throw away can be recycled and remanufactured. ISM then benefits by getting paid up to $4.00 for each empty inkjet cartridge that has a print head. Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!
