WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF FOR
MONDAY, MAY 8, 2006

Welcome to ISM's weekly newsletter for the week of May 8 - 12, 2006! Please note that the ISM news brief is now available to ISM families during regular school weeks via our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns at lburns@ismonterey.org or call at 583-2165.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found here.

1. WELCOME TWO NEW STUDENTS TO ISM: Join us in welcoming a new first grader, Alan Bedell, to Ms. Touryan's class beginning today. Alan comes to us from the Monterey Bay Charter School. Additionally, last Monday, May 1st, 5th grader Chung Soo Eun joined Mrs. Burns' class having transferred to ISM from Colton in Monterey. Welcome, boys!

2. CONFIDENTIAL INCOME SURVEY: As you are aware, our charter renewal petition is scheduled to be voted on by the MPUSD Board of Trustees on Monday, May 15th, 2006 (see Item #2 below). An area of concern for the Board involves the perception that ISM lacks socio-economic diversity. As we have not collected this information in the past, we are unable to effectively respond to this critique. We are therefore asking all ISM households to take a moment to complete the short Confidential Income Survey form that went home in student folders this past Friday. Please return them sealed in accompanying envelope and return it to the admin office no later than Wednesday, May 10th. Thank you!

3. CHARTER RENEWAL APPLICATION / MPUSD BOARD MEETING: Once again, we invite ISM families to attend the upcoming Monday, May 15th MPUSD Board of Trustees' meeting scheduled for 7:00 p.m. to hear the Board's formal decision regarding our charter renewal application for Grades K-8 for 2006-2011. This meeting will be at the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District's (MPUSD) Board of Trustees' Chambers at the Instructional Materials Center, located at 540 Canyon Del Rey. We look forward to seeing many of you

4. CELEBRATING SUCCESS: MONTEREY COUNTY MATHLETICS (CORRECTED INFO)
A. MONTEREY COUNTY MATHLETICS COMPETITION (CORRECTED): The week before last, nine of our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in the Monterey County Mathletics competition at Monterey Peninsula College. ISM's 6th grade participants under Tod Spedding's direction were Cobi Allen, Iljin Cho, and Luke Kim. Our 7th and 8th grade participants were Alex Collier, Gabe De Vera, Anna Dobrokhodova, Hussein El Bakri, Elliott Martinez, and Erik Ruediger. A whopping 237 students from 23 middle and high schools participated. Despite stiff competition, especially from area private schools, we are very pleased to announce that all nine ISM participants did an excellent job representing our school for the first time in the Mathletics competition. Cobi Allen earned an Honorable Mention award and Luke Kim earned the 3rd place award for 6th grade mathematics. Erik Ruediger earned an Honorable Mention award for Algebra. It should be noted that Erik, a 7th grader, was competing against mostly 8th graders in the Algebra competition. Well done, boys!
