WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF FOR
MONDAY, MAY 1, 2006

Welcome to ISM's weekly newsletter for the week of May 1 - 5, 2006! Please note that the ISM news brief is now available to ISM families during regular school weeks via our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns at lburns@ismonterey.org or call at 583-2165.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found here.

1. S.T.A.R. TESTING ON SCHEDULE FOR MAY 1 - 5, 8 & 9, 2006: California standardized testing, otherwise known as S.T.A.R. testing, kicked off today at ISM for all grades, except Grades 4 and 6 who will begin tomorrow. As mentioned in last week's newsbrief, all students in Grades 2 - 8 should be prepared to be in "testing mode" until 10:30 a.m. each morning - with just a few exceptions: Grade 5 until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 5/3, Grade 7 until 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, 5/4, and Grade 8 until 10:40 and 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, 5/3 and Monday, 5/8, respectively. Please note only Grades 2, 3, and 8 will be participating in ongoing testing on Monday, May 8th, while the Grade 3 will be the last grade to finish up testing on Tuesday, May 9th. To ensure the highest chance for success and ability to focus throughout this testing period, parents, please ensure that your children are well rested and receiving a nourishing breakfast each day before coming to school. During the testing breaks each day, individual classrooms will be coordinating refreshments for the students, so contact your child's teacher to see how you can help with snacks this week. Once again, we highly encourage "healthy" attendance during this time as it is time-consuming and labor intensive to follow up and capture all students for make-up testing during the week of May 8th. We would certainly appreciate being notified ahead of time if your child is going to be absent due to illness or family business during this 2006 S.T.A.R. testing period. Contact Karen Kushel with this information. Thank you!

2. CHARTER RENEWAL APPLICATION / MPUSD BOARD MEETING: Per my email of last Friday (4/28/06), please mark your calendars now for the Monday, May 15th MPUSD meeting at 7:00 p.m. to hear the Board's formal decision regarding our charter renewal application for Grades K-8 for 2006-2011. Once again, that meeting will be at the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District's (MPUSD) Board of Trustees' Chambers at the Instructional Materials Center, located at 540 Canyon Del Rey. We thank our wonderful ISM community for its ongoing support and look forward to many of you attending this meeting in several weeks.

3. CELEBRATING SUCCESS: RENE CANDIA HONORED / SPRING ARTS CONCERT (GR. 5-8) / SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR / BIG SUR 5K PARTICIPATION AWARD / MONTEREY COUNTY MATHLETICS COMPETITION
A. CELEBRATING SUCCESS: RENE CANDIA HONORED: Ilse Daly, CSUMB University Supervisor, Department of Teacher Education writes: "Rene Candia was honored for excellence in the teaching of language and culture on April 21ST, 2006, at the Annual Meeting of the International Language and Culture Foundation. Mr. Candia is a Spanish teacher at the International School of Monterey. He has attended the University of Davis, the Monterey Institute of International Studies and is currently a credential candidate at the California State University at Monterey Bay. He has also presented and participated in technology workshops and workshops on teaching effectiveness strategies, using all of these skills in his [daily] teaching [at ISM]. Mr. Candia is a native of Bolivia, where he was a full professor of metallurgy at the Universidad Mayor de San Andres. The President of his country appointed him as Executive Director in charge of the largest smelting casting company in Bolivia. As guest lecturer in the design of furnaces, he was invited to speak in Germany, Denmark, Czechoslovakia and Belgium. With such a wealth of experiences in addition to his love of teaching, Mr. Candia is a fine addition to the teaching profession." We agree with Ms. Daly, thank her for her kind words, and congratulate Senór on his accomplishments!

B. SPRING ARTS CONCERT (GR. 5-8): Under the dual leadership of Drama Instructor SARAH BENBOW and Music Instructor NATALIE SARRAZIN, last Thursday's Vaudeville-inspired Spring Arts show was a rip-roaring success. First and foremost, the students certainly appeared to be having fun and it showed - making it a joyful show for audience members to watch! Traveling back in musical history, the 5th through 8th graders performed several American classics, to include Yankee Doodle Dandy, Grand Old Flag, Meet Me in St. Louis, Give My Regards to Broadway, and Take Me Out to the Ball Game , just to name a few of the standards so well performed by our upper graders. Participation in last Thursday's show was a requirement for Drama class and we are pleased that students and parents supported this obligation. Thank you to those parents who provided concert refreshments and/or volunteer help that evening. The Spring Arts concert for the younger Kindergarten through 4th grader students -- celebrating Art, Music, and Drama Around the World -- will be held next week on Thursday, May 11th at 6:30 p.m. in our multiuse room. We'll see you then!

C. SPRING SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR: With the remarkable coordination efforts of Co-Chairs Janice Barker, Yvette Satchell, and Jennifer Stone and a host of amazingly dedicated library supporters AND enthusiastic parent and student shoppers, the Scholastic Spring Book Fair brought in more than $6000 in sales last week - nearly a $1000 more than the Winter Fair! Thank you to all who contributed to this super successful outcome! Based on this level of sales, we will benefit from $570+ in bonus books from the Fair as well as $3449.57 in "profit value" that we will be able to spend from the Scholastic catalog. Plans are already in the works to further expand the ISM library collection, as well as to also build up classroom reading sets throughout the school. The dollar amount listed above does not reflect previous credit that we are still able to use by visiting Scholastic's book warehouse located in Fremont, CA. Staffers and library chairpersons will have the ability to hand-pick desired books during a future warehouse visit, perhaps "scoring" titles that are not typically available from either the catalog or a book fair. Congratulations library volunteers and thank you shoppers!!!

D. BIG SUR 5K PARTICIPATION $$$ AWARD: I am personally pleased to announce that the ISM Schools 5K Team - 192 members strong representing 63 percent of our student enrollment - took home a 1st place $1000 awards check following the 5K walk/run yesterday. This is now the fifth consecutive year (of 5) that the ISM team has been favorably positioned to win a participation award! However, this was the first year that, due to our larger size, we competed against other teams from schools with an enrollment of 250 or more students. Thank you to all who made this happen - from the parent volunteers who stood outside soliciting participation (Jeff Cuda and Venus Watson) to those who helped organize registration forms and 5K materials (Elissa McLaurin, Janet Melac, Lynn Richardson, and Lorraine Williby) to those of you who were enthusiastic participants, despite the early arrival time! Thank you and yes, go ahead and mark your calendars for next year's event on Sunday, April 29th, 2007 because we are on a winning streak and I am a competitive 5K Coordinator!
Marathon Survivors: Join us in congratulating the following ISM community members who took on "Hurricane Point" and ran the whole Big Sur Marathon: Melanie Allen (mother of Logan and Cobi), Kenley Butler (father of Simon), Janet Melac (mother of Lucas and Adrien), Mike Sewell (father of Michaela), and Mary Welsh (mother of Cameron, James, and Anna)! We are proud of you!

E. MONTEREY COUNTY MATHLETICS COMPETITION (CORRECTED): This past weekend, nine of our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in the Monterey County Mathletics competition at Monterey Peninsula College. ISM's 6th grade participants under Tod Spedding's direction were Cobi Allen, Iljin Cho, and Luke Kim. Our 7th and 8th grade participants were Alex Collier, Gabe De Vera, Anna Dobrokhodova, Hussein El Bakri, Elliott Martinez, and Erik Ruediger. A whopping 237 students from 23 middle and high schools participated. Despite stiff competition, especially from area private schools, we are very pleased to announce that all nine ISM participants did an excellent job representing our school for the first time in the Mathletics competition. Cobi Allen earned an Honorable Mention award and Luke Kim earned the 3rd place award for 6th grade mathematics. Erik Ruediger earned an Honorable Mention award for Algebra. It should be noted that Erik, a 7th grader, was competing against mostly 8th graders in the Algebra competition. Well done, boys!

4. CURRICULUM MATTERS by Curriculum Coordinator Dr. Steve Carber: ISM's Curriculum Coordinator returned today from a Council of International Schools (CIS)/ New England Association accreditation team visit to Bogota, Colombia which lasted throughout last week. The bilingual school there had a very powerful mission statement! It was essentially about nurturing students who would contribute to bringing peace and stability to Colombia, and every student there could tell you about it! The school also embraced the philosophy of Harvard's Project Zero and Teaching for Understanding and this was visible in all sectors of the school. ISM will be welcoming its own CIS/WASC visiting team this October and any parents who may be interested in helping with ordering/preparing their lunches, stocking their team room fridge with sodas, water, and snacks, printing XL ISM t-shirts for them, or finding discounts on local top-notch hotels or dinner restaurants, we would certainly appreciate your reply to this call for help!

Once again, over 35 different activities will take place on the fields and blacktops surrounding ISM for a fun-filled last hoorah of the school year! Of course, to make this day a success, we rely on the active participation of our family base to host the day's activities as well as the newly added lunch/potluck for our students and helpers. 8. ISM SPIKING DOLPHINS GAMES #4 & #5: Let's catch up with the volleyballers: the ISM Dolphin volleyball team of Chrissie Jahn, Robby Fabry, Tod Jones, Craig Novak, Bob Oliver, Bridget Sweeney, Chantel Touryan and Peter Yan played a strong match on April 18th against a team with an average age close to half of our team, actually forcing a third game: 25:12, 26:24, 15:6. That enthusiasm carried over to the April 25th game, when the team of Robby Fabry, Diane Gsell, Tod Jones, Nikki Madden, Bridget Sweeney, and Chantel Touryan played in a very "fun" and competitive match, but not a winning one. Scores unavailable. This week the Dolphins have a bye - a good opportunity to practice and ramp up for next week's game (5/9) against the "No Names" at 7:15 pm.

9. ISM BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: A Student Government-sponsored basketball tournament took place during last week's lunch recess amongst cheers from Grades 3 through 8. Students played 3 on 3 games, with the winning team of Brian dela Rosa, Cherish dela Victoria and Ayana MacShate qualifying for the culminating game against staff members Robby Fabry, David Brandau, and Chrissie Jahn. The students put on a valiant effort; however, they could not outmaneuver staff with the final score of Staff 36: Students 27. A similar tournament is currently underway on the soccer field, with the final student game expected on Friday (5/5) and the Staff vs. Student game to be played early next week.

10. ISM STAFF TO PARTICIPATE IN WILDFLOWER TRIATHLON: This weekend, the ISM crew will be competing in the Wildflower Triathlon at Lake San Antonio this weekend. Additionally, the "Three Sweaty Chics" team represented by Ms. Julie Livingston, Ms. Chantel Touryan, and our fearless leader, Ms. Chrissie Jahn, will be competing on Sunday in the Olympic Distance Relay event. Ms. Livingston will be biking 25 miles, Ms. T will be running 6 miles, and Ms. Jahn will be swimming .9 miles (1.5 K). Go ISM Triathletes!

11. 2005 - 06 YEARBOOK STATUS: The 2005 -2006 yearbook is in process of being created! As it is a parent-driven enterprise, volunteers are definitely needed to help with the creation of the yearbook, especially informal page layouts per each grade. We currently have a layout matrix and the formal pages have been completed. The total number of pages for this year's yearbook has doubled, which consequently influences the cost / purchase price of the book. At this writing, the cost is approximately $30/book; however, the final cost will be determined shortly.
The schedule / due dates for the yearbook is as follows:
Friday, 4/28/06: Artwork from Classes are due (memo going out to staff)
Friday, 5/5/06: Final layout pages due to Editor, Richard Herbert (yearbook box)
Friday, 5/5/06: Ads and dedications due to Co-Editor, Janice Barker (in her mailbox)
Monday, 5/22/06: Final layout due to Printer (still to be determined)
Wednesday, 5/24/06: Final Proof due to ISM from Printer
Friday, 6/2/06: Final yearbooks due to ISM from printer
Week of 6/5/06: Anticipated Yearbook Distribution

Anyone interested in yearbook production, please attend our next meeting on Wednesday, April 19th at 2:00 p.m. in the multi use room and/or contact yearbook staff members (Janice Barker at 384-5524 or barkerjf1@sbcglobal.net , Richard Herbert at 392-1024 or richard@fathomsdeep.com , or Leora Sanchez at 444-8979 or lr.sanchez@sbcglobal.net ) as soon as possible.
As per last year, Dedication pages will be available for sale. Parents will once again have the opportunity to send a special dedication to their child(ren) and students may send a dedication to a fellow classmate or teacher. Likewise, teachers may also reserve dedication space for their students or colleagues, or local businesses might want to place an ad in our yearbook. Order forms and ad costs will be available later this week. Thank you! The Talented Yearbook Staff

12. MBPARENT.COM / ISM CONTEST: Contest winners to be announced later this week.

14. LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD.....: Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) Kindergarten Instructor Miss Carrie Desiring One Bedroom Apt.: Miss Carrie writes, "I am looking for a one bedroom apartment in Monterey for $900 or less available at the end of June with laundry facilities. I would prefer something with a deck or balcony and fully or partially furnished." Contact Miss Carrie at cturner @ismonterey.org re: any leads. Thank you!
2) Host Families Needed: Once again, the local representative for Youth for Understanding International Exchange, Ms. Pat Dege, has contacted ISM to let us know that they are looking for families to host an international high school student. If interested, call 1-800-872-0200, ext. 284, call Pat directly at 375-6143, or visit the YFU website at ( www.YouthForUnderstanding.org .
3) Heavy Duty Vacuum Cleaner: Now that many of us have children, homes, pets, and the like, our wish list changes from a nice stereo system to a vacuum cleaner that REALLY works! So, if anyone has upgraded their vacuum and wonders what to do with their less expensive cast-off vacuum, consider donating it to ISM. Contact Lisa Griffin Burns to discuss further.
4) Recycling of Printer Cartridges Yields Payoff: Contribution checks continue to roll in! Keep up the phenomenal effort! We are super enthusiastic to continue this program, so please spread the word to family members, colleagues, etc and forward your used cartridges to the admin office. The empty cartridges that we - as a community - typically throw away can be recycled and remanufactured. ISM will then benefit by getting paid up to $4.00 for each empty inkjet cartridge that has a print head. Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!
