BI-WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF FOR
MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2006

Welcome to ISM's 2006-07 bi-weekly newsletter covering Monday, December 4th - Friday, December 15th, 2006! This is a change from previous years' communications, which were available each Monday. The ISM news brief will now be updated twice a month and available to ISM families on our website no later than 7:30 p.m. each second Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), unless otherwise noted. To request hardcopy notification, please contact Business Administrator / news brief editor Lisa Griffin Burns at 583-2165 or email at lburns@ismonterey.org . To submit newsbrief contributions, forward them per email by the Wednesday prior to the publication date.
Please note: Past newsletters can be found here.

1. WELCOME TO ISM! Jacob Matiyevsky, a Kindergartener, joined Miss Carrie's class last Monday, November 27th as a transfer student from Colton. To aid his family in making this mid-year move, he visited ISM to "shadow" in Miss Carrie's class on Tuesday, November 14th and fit right in! We want to warmly welcome Jacob and his family to the ISM community.

Please also join us in welcoming "Baby Justin Alex", brother to 3rd grader Caitlin McLennan, born on Wednesday, November 8th at 8:52 a.m.! Weighing in at 8 pounds 4 ounces, Justin packs a lot of cuddling potential! We look forward to seeing him in several years as an incoming Kindergartner in the 2011-12 class!

2. STRATEGIC PLANNING MESSAGE FROM ISM BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIRPERSON, PRASHANT GUPTA - Emailed to ISM community members last Friday, December 1, 2006: Dear ISM faculty, staff, students, and parents:
Now in its sixth year of operation with more than 330 students enrolled and a remarkable staff delivering high-quality learning experiences each school day, the International School of Monterey has successfully established itself as a premiere Kindergarten through Grade 8 school. Executing successfully on the school's original strategic plan has brought us to where we are today. The ISM Board feels that it is time to establish the next set of clear long-term strategies-in key areas such as curriculum, enrollment, financing, and facilities- to solidify the school's promising future over the next few years. Toward that end, the ISM Board will immediately launch a thoughtful strategic planning process.

I have convened a subcommittee of the board to initiate the strategic planning process. Sean Madden, marketing director for CSU Monterey Bay will chair the group. He is joined by Grant Miles, vice president at HSBC; Dr. Roberta Infelise, school administrator and educational consultant; and Joanne Storkan, founding ISM Board member. All of them have previously engaged in strategic planning processes and they bring rich and diverse perspectives to ours. This subcommittee will determine specific target outcomes, as well as the steps, for the strategic planning process. It will then determine how best to resource and steer the process to achieve those outcomes. The process will be transparent and inclusive. The subcommittee will give voice to stakeholder groups including students, parents, teachers, and staff, and it will collaborate with the ISM Executive Director throughout the process.

We will regularly communicate the process and its progress via school communication channels. Please expect to hear from the subcommittee regarding participation in the weeks ahead. Meanwhile, if you have thoughts or suggestions for the subcommittee members as they define the process, please email them to strategic@ismonterey.org at your convenience.

Please note that effective December 2006, the ISM Board meeting schedule changed. The ISM Board of Trustees members will now meet monthly on the third Monday of the month, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The December meeting is slated for Monday, December 18th in the ISM library.

3. CHARITABLE GIVING: ISM FOOD DRIVE FOR THE MONTEREY COUNTY FOOD BANK - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1ST - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20TH: ISM is sponsoring our third annual canned food drive this month! Last year, we collected over 14 full barrels of food weighing nearly two tons! Our goal this year is to beat that record and fill 18 barrels of non-perishable items. Although we live on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula, an area visited by tourists from all over the world, due to its phenomenal natural beauty, the appeal of area restaurants and hotels, the education and enjoyment of the award-winning Monterey Bay Aquarium, it is at this time of year that it behooves us to remember that the percentage of residents living in poverty continues to grow within Monterey County. It is this community of needy people that we hope to help by hosting this annual holiday food drive.
A series of incentives will be offered to classes for: bringing in a variety of items on specified days, and for being the first to fill up their classroom barrels. The class awarded the most points at the end of the food drive will earn a classroom party to be enjoyed when they return to school in January 2007. For further questions, please contact Lisa Wichael-Loomis at lwloomis@ismonterey.org.

OTHER CHARITABLE GIVING SUCCESS: We wanted to also inform you of the final results of several fundraising campaigns that we have held this year: (1) TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF: ISM students raised $819.36; (2) DENIM DAY benefiting Women's Cancer Programs: We mailed Lee Jeans a check for $856.00 as a result of this campaign; and (3) Mrs. Sally Burns 5th graders donated 14 homemade pies to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner held at the Monterey Fairgrounds on Wednesday evening, November 22nd. We thank all the ISM students and their families for contributing to this outcome as well as to Sally Burns for coordinating all of these efforts!

4. ANTICIPATED DELIVERY DATE FOR STUDENT PHOTO PACKAGES - TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5TH: We are expecting that pre-ordered photo packages by Wei Chang will be delivered tomorrow and should be ready to distribute by Wednesday, December 6th. Once organized, they will be forwarded to families via each child's homeroom teachers. Please direct any questions regarding photo quality, requests for retakes, and the like to Wei Chang directly at 375-3478.

5. DECEMBER SATURDAY WORK DAY - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9TH, 9:30 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.: This coming Saturday, 12/9/06, is the December Work Day, chaired by Steve Moore, a returning chair from last year. This time round, much of the Work Day activity will take place in ISM's Library and Lower Elementary Pod areas. Carpenters, cleaners/sorters, painters, and decorators are particularly welcome! Carpenters have the job of rebuilding and installing bookshelves for our new literacy center in the south Pod. If possible, please bring hammers and nails for this project. Those volunteers assisting with cleaning/sorting tasks will have their hands full dusting, straightening, and moving books and bookshelves in the library. Painters will also be needed to paint the back wall of the library, while decorators will be creating bulletin boards, stapling fabric, and putting up posters. By the end of the Work Day, ISM's literacy areas will have a new look, Work Day helpers will feel a positive sense of accomplishment, and ISM students will thrill to see the more colorful, child-friendly environments!

6. SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL (SSC) NOMINATIONS : The ISM SSC is still accepting nominations for two open parent spots on the council. In short, the SSC is an elected group of teachers, parents, and classified employees who work with the Director / Head of School to develop, review, evaluate, and allocate funds for school improvement programs (SIP). Except for the director, each council member must be chosen by his or her peer group for a three-year term. To that end, we will be holding elections the week of December 12th with the position beginning with our first meeting in January 2007. If you are interested in joining Kenley Butler (father of 3rd grader Simon & Kindergartener Nora), Murali Tummala (father of 5th grader Neeli) and Kim Campbell (father of 6th grader Conor) as parent representatives, throw your hat into the ring by writing or emailing Mrs. Jahn (cjahn@ismonterey.org) by Friday, December 1st. Staff will be conducting a similar process to fill their one open spot, joining Barbara Peters (I.A. 5th grade), Caryn St. Germain (Grade 4) and Alicia Wharton (Grade 4).

8. ASI / FRESH MEAL PROGRAM NOTES
A. AFTERSCHOOL INTERNATIONAL (ASI): ASI bills for the month of December are now out and due by this Thursday, December 7th. Due to the upcoming holiday break, January bills will be posted Monday, December 18th, but will not be due until "next year" on Friday, January 12th. ASI parents: In order to avoid late fees, please submit your payment promptly per the deadlines listed above. Please also remember to send any changes to your child's schedule for the new year in writing to Miss Lisa directly. Just a reminder that two weeks notice is required for any changes that may need to be made, if they are to be reflected on the next month's bills.

To reach Lisa Wichael-Loomis after 3:30 p.m. daily, the ASI & Fresh Lunch Programs Coordinator, the best method is via her email at lwloomis@ismonterey.org as she does check it throughout the day. If you would like to reach her by phone, her direct line is 583-2170 and she does have voicemail on that extension. She does only check voicemail about once a day, so if you have an urgent question, please consider communicating by email. Most importantly, if you need to reach the Afterschool program between the hours of 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. daily, please use the direct line of 583-2171. The ASI leaders in the library will be monitoring this line during ASI operational hours. The ISM front line of 583-2165 is not routinely answered after 4:00 p.m. each afternoon once Karen Kushel departs for the day. We hope this information will help to clarify the best way to contact Lisa Wichael-Loomis or the ASI program providers.

B. FRESH MEAL PROGRAM: Starting last month, fresh lunch menus became available on our ISM website at http://www.ismonterey.org/lunchASI.html . This is a great resource for families who have a challenging time picking up forms from school or receiving information via their child(ren). The monthly menus are being posted at the same time, if not before, the actual menu is printed in hardcopy format. For example, January menus will be posted online as well as distributed to students by next Monday, December 11th. Any lunch orders for the first week following the Winter Break will actually be due before we depart for break. The deadline will be Thursday, December 21st as Friday, December 22nd is the first day of break.

Fresh Lunch Partnership: Mr. D's Grade 3 class and Serendipity Farms Miss Lisa, our ISM Fresh Lunch Program Coordinator, has been working for the past several weeks with Mr. D's third grade class and Serendipity Farms to incorporate more fresh and organic produce into our daily meal program. Mr. D's class has been supplying the fresh lunch program with lettuce from our own ISM garden weekly. Students themselves have been going into the garden to harvest the fresh lettuce for each meal, and then beaming with pride as they deliver it to the kitchen for the day's lunch! Another new relationship that we have recently established is with Serendipity Farms of Carmel Valley. Jamie Collins, the Farm's owner/operator, has been bringing a variety of fresh heirloom tomatoes, parsley, cabbage, beets, and chard to ISM weekly. She is excited to be able to work with our school and looks forward to bringing an even larger variety of fruits and vegetables in the upcoming seasons.

12. LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD..... : Listed below are a few things desired by community members:
1) BONE MARROW DONORS: An ISM community member is calling for help from potential bone marrow donors to help save the life of a friend's 2-year old son. His name is Harrison and he is suffering from AML, a rare form of leukemia. His mother, Stephanie Isaacson(Email her at: stephanielynnsf@yahoo.com ) is pleading for help: "Harrison is doing well for the moment but the doctors are telling us that his best chance for permanent remission is now a bone marrow or cord blood stem cell transplant. Finding a match for him is very complicated. His best chance was a full sibling, but [his brother] is not a match. Finding a donor on the national registry is very difficult and further complicated by the fact that he is bi-racial (Filipino and Caucasian). We received word that the National Registry does not have a match for him so now we are throwing all our resources into generating potential donors. The test to become a donor is a simple swab of the inside of your cheek. It's painless and easy in this day and age. The process of donating is not easy, but if you were told you might save a life, would you endure some discomfort? Refer to the following website to see recent media, read background information, and get an idea of something you might do to help: www.helpharrison.com . Even if a donor for Harrison is not found, an increase in ethnic minority participation on the bone marrow registry will help others in the same position. At the very least, please forward this information on to someone else. Any aid you might provide would be incredibly appreciated. All the best to you and your families!"

2) RECYCLED PRINTER CARTRIDGES: To date, this program has been extremely successful, so we definitely encourage the ISM community to continue to support it by turning in your used printer cartridges to the front office. The monies we receive from this program help to offset office products purchasing, which directly supports student learning through availability of photocopy paper, toner, etc. So, please spread the word to family members, colleagues, neighbors, and forward your used cartridges to us! ISM will then benefit by getting paid up to $4.00 for each empty inkjet cartridge that has a print head. Acceptable brands include HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq, Brother, Dell, Canon, and Apple; however, Epson print cartridges cannot be accepted as they are produced without a print head. If possible, please submit cartridges either in their original packaging or a Ziploc bag to keep it safe from damages and spills. Thank you!

WORLD NEIGHBORHOOD GALA 2007: IT'S A GO!: From Carrie Miles, ISM Foundation Board Treasurer: Our 4th annual World Neighborhood Gala will be held on Saturday, April 14th, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Please mark this date in your calendar! The format is going to be different compared to past years. This year, we want to celebrate the parents and staff of ISM because of all the hard work you do to support the school throughout the year! There will be a variety of live and silent auction items on which to bid, and afterwards, we can all dance the night away to the great music of the Mike Marotta band.

To make this event as successful as in the past, (we raised an average of $50,000 per year for ISM), I am asking for your help. There are several ways to volunteer, including auction item solicitation, working the day of the event, helping out with mailings, etc. It is a great opportunity to serve your mandatory volunteer hours! If you can donate an item or service, please fill out a donation form and return it to the office along with your item or gift certificate. Thank-you for your support and I hope to see you at the there! Carrie can be reached at 261-4218 or by email at clmiles33@aol.com .
