We are hopeful that many of you were on hand this past Thursday evening to witness and enjoy the "Globetrotters" concert featuring Instrumental Music, Music, and Drama student performances, directed respectively by Mr. Gee, Mr. Dvorak, and Miss Anna. The show highlighted not only what the students have been learning this quarter in these disciplines, but also the global perspective and technology emphasis of our international curriculum. We were extremely proud of our students, who were comfortable to perform on stage, display their enthusiasm and personality, and simply enjoy themselves, as well as our instructors who put together an amazingly entertaining and unique show.
ISM Parent and photographer, Richard Herbert, graciously agreed to photograph the evening show and his photos are available for viewing online at:
http://fathomsdeep.com/2005ISMSpringConcert/.
Anyone interested in purchasing full size images can email Richard at richardherbert@fathomsdeep.com; please indicate specific image(s) "by file name" and as time permits, he will try to accommodate orders for either CDs or actual prints. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Scott Evers, father of 3rd grader Preston, for volunteering to video tape Thursday's performance.

In recognition of the end-of-school year demands on parents, students, and staff, we have decided to cancel the school-wide Parent Meeting originally scheduled for Thursday evening, June 2nd at 6:30 p.m. For those community members who had planned to attend and share feedback at that meeting, please forward your comments and/or concerns to Executive Director Chrissie Jahn at
cjahn@ismonterey.org
as well as any concerned staff member.

Many of you may be surprised to realize that the International Festival will be happening this coming Sunday, June 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event, designed to showcase ISM's unique curriculum, has in the past featured country and carnival booths, entertainment, and food. While the goal is the same this year, staff organizers have opted to emphasize student drama performances and community musical acts as the "main attractions" supported by the lure of carnival booths (with prizes), a cake contest and cake walk, an English Tea Room, a massage booth, and delicious Greek, Italian, and Indian foods. Curly's Barbecue, owned by Haig Kocek (father of Kindergartner Mickela and 4th grader Tanya) will also be returning for the 3rd consecutive year to be our "BBQ'er extraordinaire" and he is also donating all the chicken for the Tandoori chicken meals.
During this morning's assembly, Miss Anna requested ISM students in Grades 1, 2/3A, 4, 6, and 7 to please be aware of the performance schedule for Sunday to ensure that they arrive at an appropriate time prior to their respective drama skit. For the indoor, multiuse room stage, the schedule is as follows:
11:15 a.m.: Kevin Lin, Grade 4, on piano;
11:25 a.m.: Executive Director Chrissie Jahn welcomes attendees;
11:30 a.m.: Grade 2/3A students perform The Seven Brothers, a Chinese Folktale;
12:05 p.m.: Grade 4 students perform Help, Help the Gobolinks, a play about extra-terrestrials;
12:45 p.m.: Grade 1 students perform The Gift From the Gods, a journey through the earth's habitats;
1:30 - 2:15 p.m.: Grades 6 and 7 perform The Breakfast Club, Monty Python, Napoleon Dynamite and talent show performances by Eric Ruediger and Gabe deVera, Grade 6, on piano, Roland Sanchez, Grade 7, singing, and a 7th grade dance routine;
2:40 p.m.: Glen Baker's Jazz Band
The schedule for the outdoor stage kicks off at:
11:15 a.m.: "Mr. D" leads a select group of middle schoolers in an energetic STOMP performance;
12:00 Noon: Taekwondo Demonstration with Master Rogers;
1:00 p.m.: Miss Kim jams with Kindergartners on variety of percussion instruments.
Volunteer help is still needed to provide home-baked or purchased cakes for the cakewalk as well as to assist in a variety of jobs throughout the day. Cake contributions - as listed on the flyer distributed last week - can be dropped off at the staff lounge Friday, June 3rd after 3:00 p.m. or Sunday, June 5th by 10:30 a.m. Contact Lisa Griffin Burns at
lburns@ismonterey.org
or Lisa Wichael-Loomis at
lwloomis@ismonterey.org
to register your interest in helping or simply support this event by providing a cake, ensuring that your child(ren) is on campus to perform Sunday, and/or partake of the games and food. We'll see you there!
You are invited to support the sciences this week and attend our first-ever 6th Grade Science Exposition this coming Wednesday, June 1st from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Individual student science projects will be on display and available for viewing at 6:30 p.m., an awards ceremony at 6:50 a.m., dinner at 7:15 p.m., and additional time for viewing of displays beginning at 7:40 p.m. The dinner meal will consist of pizza complimented by side dishes provided by ISM parents. This event is open to the all ISM students and families, so please stop by. Anyone interested in contributing food, or assisting with set-up/clean-up activities are asked to please email Mr. Landrum at
mlandrum@ismonterey.org.
Mr. D, ISM's Art and Music instructor, kindly asks that students (and parents) pick up their abstract, self-portrait sculptures by this Friday, June 3rd no later than 3:30 p.m. All the remaining sculptures will be in the library on top of the bookshelves, in readiment for pick-up. [Note: The library will be used for the English Tea Room during for the International Festival and additional space is needed.] We are still considering the possibility later in the Fall of securing an art show venue and may ask some students to contribute their sculpture and essays for such a show. More to follow if that eventuality occurs.
If all goes well, students will be receiving their ordered yearbooks this coming Friday, June 3rd and can begin signing them. The alternative delivery date would be Monday, June 6th. This year's book is the largest we have yet published and it features a mixture of black and white and color pages, which helped to keep the purchase cost reasonable. Without the invaluable help of Leora Sanchez, mother of Lauren (Grade 1) and Roland (Grade 7), Richard Herbert, father of Rowan (Grade 3), and Janice Barker, mother of Kasey (Grade 1), plus numerous other student and parent contributors, this annual publication would not have been conceived, designed, photographed, laid out, digitally improved, edited, publicized, and ultimately delivered to the printer. Take time to acknowledge their work and share a word of thanks should you see one of these multi-talented members of our community.
This week marks the last week students will be able to check out library books; a sure sign that the school year is winding down. During regular classroom visits to the library or during recess time, students may check out books; however the due dates will be for early next week. Key library volunteers will also try to notify students / parents of overdue books and collect them prior to the end of school on June 10th.
In addition to Field Day being held on the last day of school, Friday, June 10th, we will also be debuting our first-ever student talent show in the morning during an all-school assembly beginning at 9:05 a.m. Incredibly, over 50+ students - representing 30 acts -- will share their musical (instruments, song, and dance), athletic (gymnastics, karate, jump rope, and yo-yo), and entertainment (comedy and magic) talents. All grades are taking part and the event was the brainchild of our Student Government President, Jordan Kausin. Thank you to all who auditioned! Following the talent show at approximately 10:40 a.m., Field Day will kick into high gear under the direction of Miss Livingston. Those parents who have volunteered in the past are encouraged to do so again and newcomers are eagerly welcomed, as well. Contact our P.E. instructor at 583-1265.
