Fully accredited by The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and The Council of International Schools (CIS), the International School of Monterey (ISM) is
located on the picturesque and scenic Monterey Bay, which provides an excellent resource for research and study by ISM students. ISM offers
an exceptional international academic and extracurricular program
for children in grades K - 8. First opened in September 2001, ISM
has added at least one grade each year,
with the possibility of extending through
grade 12 in the future.
The mission, philosophy, and curriculum of the International
School of Monterey fulfills for school age children what Monterey
represents for adults through its unique higher education institutions
and its international and multicultural businesses.
ISM is a non-profit, co-educational
English-language, public charter school, open to all applicants. Admission is based on an open lottery system.
ISM was created to bring world class international education to a public school setting; to
integrate best practices, established standards, and international curriculum; maintain a
multicultural environment that advances understanding and respect for all; and promote strong
partnerships among school, home, and community. With full community involvement, ISM has
developed a comprehensive Strategic Plan, which will guide its ongoing efforts at improvement.
Reading, writing, math, problem solving and thinking are not just things for kids to do during the school year. Kids who don’t read over the summer, or write over the summer, or use their math skills over the summer lose some of those skills. It usually takes the first two months of school to get the skills back that have been lost over the summer.
The International School of Monterey Summer Projects will offer students at each grade level the opportunity to work on creative projects. Students can work on the projects independently and/or with their parents. These projects require students to use reading, writing and math skills to create something.
In the fall, we will have a Summer Project Fair, where we will display all of the projects that our students complete. All students who participate will receive special awards and based on the total number of points that students earn, they may also win prizes.
As a special incentive, I am issuing a special challenge. My challenge involves students earning as many points as they can by completing Summer Projects. Next fall, I will ride my bike one mile for every 5000 Summer Project Points that all of our ISM students earn this summer.
The top 20 readers will be invited to ride part or all (depending on how far I have to ride) of the way with me.
The Summer Project instructions are linked belowaccording to the grade the student will be entering in the 2009-10 school year. Each Summer Project that a student completes should be saved. In the fall we will ask all of our students to bring all of their Summer Projects to school. All projects will be displayed at the Summer Project Fair.
Parents and students please also make sure to complete a Summer Project Tally Sheet for each project that a child completes. -Program Letter and
Tally Sheet
PS. ISM would like you to remember to go online to record the books you read (http://www.scholastic.com/summerreading/). Let's see if ISM can read more books than all of the other schools.
Also, while you are reading books as part of the Summer Project Challenge, you might want to also enter your reading list in the “Borders Reading Challenge!” If you are 12 or under, you’re in! Read any eight books and list them on a Borders Reading Challenge Worksheet. Bring the Worksheet to Borders and you will receive up to a 50% discount on books and projects for kids. You can find the worksheet by going to www.borders.com and then go to Summer Reading Kids, or just look here. There is also a Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program. Fill-up your reading journal and received a free(!) book...so check here too!
