Official Message from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction

In April 2012, two organizations, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association (the plaintiffs), filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) alleging widespread, systemic non-compliance by local educational agencies with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504. The suit also alleges that the CDE fails to monitor, investigate, and correct such non-compliance in accordance with the law. The CDE denies these allegations and is actively defending the litigation.

As part of the litigation discovery process, the plaintiffs have requested numerous documents as well as student data collected and stored by the CDE. Many of the requested documents and data stored in the CDE databases contain personally identifiable information (PII) of children, including children with disabilities, children who requested an assessment or who were assessed for special education eligibility, and children who are attending or who have attended a California school at any time since January 1, 2008. Although the CDE has contested the production of such information, the court at this juncture has ordered the CDE to produce to plaintiffs’ legal counsel documents and data that contain student PII. Included in the court’s order to produce documents and data is a Protective Order prohibiting the plaintiffs and their legal counsel from disclosing confidential information acquired in the course of the lawsuit, including PII, to anyone other than the parties, their attorneys and consultants, and the court. None of this information may be used outside the context of this lawsuit; no student’s identifying records will be disclosed to the public.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sets out the requirements for the protection of privacy of parents and students, including privacy of student records. Generally, parents and/or students must provide written consent before an educational agency may disclose PII. However, there are exceptions to this general rule. Specifically, an educational agency must provide PII when ordered by a court, which the CDE has been ordered to do in this litigation. The CDE is obligated to inform the parent or student that the court has ordered it to produce documents and/or data that includes those individuals’ PII and that such persons may object directly to the court regarding this disclosure. To that end, and to comply with FERPA, the CDE has asked all Local Educational Agencies, including ISM, to post the following link to CDE’s Web site, http://www.cde.ca.gov/morganhillcase, from February 1, 2016, through April 1, 2016. The link provides the Notice and Objection Form required by FERPA.

5th-Grade PYP Water Exhibition ~ Thursday, April 16, 6-8pm

It is an exciting time of year for ISM’s 5th grade students! They will present their PYP Water Exhibition projects on Thursday, April 16 from 6-8pm. Students develop and present these projects at the end of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme to demonstrate their mastery of the five essential elements of the PYP: Concepts, Skills, Knowledge, Attitudes, and Action.

On the evening of the event, students will showcase their research, understandings, and actions taken based on what they have learned. Earlier that same week, they will invite all ISM students to attend the Exhibition during school hours.

The Exhibition is the culminating project marking the matriculation of students from the PYP into the MYP. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating and supporting our ISM 5th graders.

National Philanthropy Day 2014 Honors ISM Volunteers and 8th Grader

NPD1.JPGISM parent volunteers Sunder & Varna Ramaswamy were recognized as Distinguished Agency Honorees at the National Philanthropy Day for the Central Coast awards luncheon on Friday, November 21. KSBW News anchor and event emcee Dan Green described their inspirational support of our school with these words: "Leading the all-volunteer team that runs ISM's library, Varna oversees an amazing hub for student learning. Meanwhile, Sunder provides invaluable leadership and insight as ISM board vice chair. Together they contribute generous financial support and hundreds of hours to Monterey County's first IB World School."

NPD2.JPGEighth grader Madeline Hoisington was also recognized as a finalist for the Outstanding Philanthropic Youth award based on her conscientious, compassionate, and responsible citizenship centered on ocean awareness and protection. Being concerned about the wellbeing of the ocean they live next to, Madeline and three friends formed h2o, an oceanographic club seeking to create awareness about plastic and its impact on the Monterey Bay and the ocean as a whole. The club has hosted a local screening of "Bag It. Is Your Life Too Plastic?" a 2010 documentary by Susan Beraza; built and publicly presented a "Bag Monster" suit to represent the 500+ plastic bags each person uses annually; and advocated for the City of Marina to ban plastic bags. Overall, they work to educate their classmates and our community to raise ocean awareness.

Holiday Fund Drive Tops $10K on Day 2

Foundation volunteers thank donors during 2014 Holiday Fund DriveBRING IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT…

…a little sooner this year! We have moved the ISM HOLIDAY FUND DRIVE earlier to November 17-21 this year, just before Thanksgiving, because it’s the perfect time of year for you to give thanks for the phenomenal education ISM children receive. And to give financially in a meaningful way to show how deeply thankful you are.

THE MORE YOU GIVE, THE MORE ISM GETS...  This year we have partnered with Monterey Peninsula Foundation through the Charity Match program to maximize our Holiday Fund Drive efforts! Charity Match lets you leverage your gift to earn 20 cents extra for ISM for every dollar you donate. As a bonus, if we raise the most of any charity during the month of November, we will earn an extra $1,000. Your contribution toward our Holiday Fund Drive goal of $70,000 and the Monterey Peninsula Foundation match will go a long way toward underwriting performing arts, visual arts, PE, enhanced math, and Spanish at ISM—the value-added programs that other public schools simply don't have. It's time to GIVE GENEROUSLY again!

YOUR GIVING MAKES ISM SPECIAL...  One of the most important things making ISM great is that our families donate time and money to make it THE VERY BEST SCHOOL POSSIBLE. Thank you if you have already made gifts or pledges this year. We hope that you will make an additional gift as part of the Holiday Fund Drive, and we encourage you to contribute as much as possible toward the $1,800 per student Family Share target.

IT'S A TREAT TO GIVE... Each person making a donation during the Holiday Fund Drive will receive a treat generously donated by Layers Bakery in Monterey. Volunteers will be available at the regular and alternate pickup/dropoff areas to hand out forms, accept your donations, and hand off the treats. We look forward to seeing you there!

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO... Get a donation card from an ISM Foundation rep during dropoff or pickup. Complete the donor information including writing the last name of your student(s) on the label at the bottom of the form so we can credit your Family Share before the donation goes to Charity Match.
Enter credit/debit card information, or make out a check to Monterey Peninsula Foundation being sure to write International School of Monterey in the memo line so that your donation will get matched and credited to ISM. Hand the donation card and check, if applicable, to one of our volunteers during the Holiday Fund Drive or drop them in the ISM Foundation box in the front office.

PLEASE DON'T SEND YOUR FORM DIRECTLY to Charity Match. Monterey Peninsula Foundation asks us to log your information into the Charity Match database, and we also want to log it into ours so that the ISM Foundation can make sure that every cent contributed by you gets credited to ISM and toward your Family Share.

YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE DIRECTLY ONLINE IF YOU PREFER… Simply click the 2014 Holiday Fund Drive Charity Match link on the ISM website, and follow the online prompts to complete your online donation.

YOU CAN BRING CASH IF YOU WANT… and we will deposit it directly toward your Family Share. Unfortunately, Charity Match does not accept cash, so we will not earn matching funds on cash donations.

LAST STEP… Spend the rest of the school year enjoying the fantastic education our children receive knowing that YOUR GIVING IS A HUGE PART OF WHAT THEY'RE GETTING as ISM pursues it mission to "educate all children toward becoming conscientious, compassionate, and responsible citizens of the world."

Thanks so much!

The ISM Foundation Team

P.S. If you are able to contribute more, please help support the education of another student at ISM whose family does not have the means by giving even more than the Family Share in THE SPIRIT OF HOLIDAY GIVING. After all, we're ONE BIG ISM FAMILY!

ISM Teacher Tod Spedding Wins KSBW Crystal Apple Award

ISM 5th-grade teacher Tod Spedding has received a KSBW Crystal Apple award presented by Pebble Beach Company. KSBW news anchor Dan Green and his video crew surprised Tod in his classroom, where he was, as typical, involved in a deep discussion with his huddled students. The presentation aired on the 6pm news on Tuesday, October 28.

On Thursday, October 30, again on the 6pm news, KSBW will air an extended feature on Mr. Spedding and the KSBW Crystal Apple Award.

Since it began in 2005, the Crystal Apple Award presented by Pebble Beach Company has become widely recognized on the Central Coast as the area's most prestigious educational award.

Finally, special thanks to the volunteer servers who ensured that the event went smoothly and was enjoyed by all the staff.

6th Graders Harness the Wind at The Tech Challenge

ISM 6th graders achieved incredible success putting brainpower, engineering design, and science together to complete the challenge of harnessing the wind to move water uphill in The Tech Challenge held at The Tech Museum in San Jose on Saturday, April 12.

Eleven ISM teams (all of the 6th grade) participated in the event along with 500+ other students. The ISM Techtronix Team (Lina Fang, Trinity Mobley, Isaiah Fuentes, Andrea Villa Cardenas) earned 2nd place for BEST DEVICE PERFORMANCE, meeting the challenge in 48 seconds!  The ISM Testtubes (Riley Mann, Dale Sanchez, Rohan Sethi, Leo Tilley) earned 2nd place for BEST ENGINEERING PROCESS.

ISM also held an in-house challenge and award ceremony where students recognized teammates and other teams for their inspiration, hard work, levity, organization, and many other important characteristics that went into making the experience a success. This proved to be an authentic and genuine expression of student learning.

Next years' challenge involves building earthquake safe structures.

Boys Basketball Undefeated

Undefeated ISM 2014 boys basketball team photoThe 2014 ISM boys varsity basketball team put together the first-ever undefeated season by an ISM basketball team or any ISM boys team. The 2011 girls soccer team achieved the first undefeated season by an ISM team. In both cases, the achievement has been even more impressive and meaningful because we stuck to our philosophy of "no cuts" and "everyone plays." Congratulations to the team, and to coach Izzy Ricardez and athletic director Robby Fabry for their leadership!
